September 1, 2016

The Johnson City Lion’s Club met in regular session for the 1st meeting of September 2016 at the Johnson City Country Club on 9/1/16.  Those present were King Lion Steve Campbell, PDG Ed Gibbons, Theresa Gibbons, PP Ken Gough, Jerry Lonon, Bill Pike, Brian Powell, Dennis Powell, Don Raines, Tim Tapp, CB Willis, George Winton, D.J. Naron and her guest Paul Leardi from Pensacola Florida and DG Paulette Bailey.

It should be noted that Jerry Lonon was out of town for our last meeting in August but attended a Lion’s meeting in Sheridan Wyoming.

King Lion Campbell called the meeting to order and Dennis Powell led in the pledge and Tim Tapp led in prayer. The Lion Tamer collected 2.20 in fines and the Tail Twister collected 4.18.  C.B. Willis won the drawing but we neglected to ask what fund he wanted the money deposited to.  This will be corrected at the next regular meeting.

D.J. Naron introduced her friend/fiancé, Lion Paul Leardi who is the Tail Twister of his club in Pensacola Florida.

Lion and PDG Ed Gibbons had two announcements:

  1. 9/8/16- Elizabethton Lion’s club to do an eye screening using our camera.  They estimate around 200 children to be screened.
  2. The new optometrist in Erwin is on board to help us and we need to thank Lion Bill Pike for explaining the program and what his assistance would mean to the people of Unicoi County.

Lion and PP Ken Gough had some announcements:

  1. 9/24 is the trip to Roanoke for Eyeglass collection and recycling.  If you have glasses, you need to get them to Ken’s office before that date.  He hopes to take 2000 pair.
  2. The Centennial Project materials list has come to a total of $7,262.00 before the signage (which will be an additional cost).  We had decided on a $6,000.00 budget.

After this announcement PDG Ed Gibbons made a motion to make the budget for the project 7,262.00. There was a second to this motion by Lion Dennis Powell.  Lion George Winton asked if they had a history of cost overrun.  The question was answered that regardless of any overrun the club would pay up to $7,262.00.  All were favor of the motion.  Ken Gough will contact Parks and Recreation again.

Lion George Winton had an announcement regarding the Turtle Derby:

  1. He would check to see if the date could be changed to 10/20 due to the Science Hill football schedule and any interference that could come from that on the 21st.

There will be no meeting of the club on September 15, 2016.

PDG Ed Gibbons introduced DG Paulette Bailey who presented a certificate to PDG Gibbons for his training as a Guiding Lion. In this presentation, Mr. Southerland discussed the history of VBI and gave details on the number of employees and their commitment to providing jobs for sight impaired and blind individuals as well as their hiring of several individuals who are not blind.  They are very proud of the work that they do for the military, with contracts with the Army, the Navy and the Marine Corps for helmet covers, and fitness pants.  He also discussed the paper towels that the industry deals in and the fact that they are still producing mattresses just as they have since 1951.  They currently produce 17 types of beds.  They also have a partnership with General Electric.  He was also happy to report that the average salary is above minimum wage and that a benefits package is offered.

King Lion Gough thanked Lion Sutherland for his presentation and gave him a Lion’s International coffee mug as a thank you gift.

King Lion Gough announced the board meeting next week.  The  Tail Twister collected 2.55 and the Lion Tamer collected 1.35.  The Lion Tamer himself won the drawing and said that he wanted it to go the Billy Pike Scholarship Fund which being interpreted is the Sight Conservation fund.

With no other business to come before the club the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Tim Tapp – Secretary

In addition to the Lion’s from these clubs we were honored to have Dr. Brian Nolan, President of East Tennessee State University and Lion’s Club International Director Jerome Thompson.

The meeting was called to order at 12 noon by King Lion Ken Gough who recognized 2nd Vice District Governor Elect Brandon Johnson.  Lion Tim Tapp was called on for prayer followed by Lion C.B. Willis leading in the pledge to the flag.

2VDGE Johnson recognized PDG Ed Gibbons, PDG Bob Miller, FVDGE Adam Bowling and RC Edna Longwell.

It should be noted that Lion Tamer George Winton paid everyone’s fines for them today and that amount came to $9.00.  We also found 24 cents at one table so that amount will be added to the fines collected.  Thank You Lion George for your gracious donation.

King Lion Ken Gough brought up local club business by reminding everyone of the Eyeglass Recycle Trip to Roanoke in April.  Volunteers are still being accepted with several indicating that they are planning to go.  The Johnson City Club will have elections at the first meeting in April.  Lion Steve Campbell presented the nominating committee report which is as follows:

At this point the floor was opened for nominations.  PDG Ed Gibbons moved that motions cease and there were several to second the motion.  All were in favor except for Lion Clem Wilkes.  It was noted that this is the “worst slate of officers in the history of the club.”  J

2VDGE Brandon Johnson introduced Dr. Bryan Nolan by talking about the new energy that Dr. Nolan has brought to ETSU and his personal interaction with students.  Dr. Nolan talked about the purpose and mission of ETSU as being one of improving the quality of life for people of this region.  It is a mission that has not changed since Dr. Sidney Gilbreath expressed the same desire in the beginning of the institution.  ETSU seeks to bring together the Tri Cities as it improves life in the region.  He spent the remainder of his time talking about the academic strength and integrity found at ETSU and discussed statistics favorable to the university.  He also discussed the partnership with Northeast State and talked about the athletic programs (especially basketball).    The two most exciting things in the future that will impact ETSU favorably would be a merger between MSHA and Wellmont and the development of the new Performing Arts Center.  He thanked the Lion’s Club for participation in volunteerism.  King Lion Ken Gough presented Dr. Nolan with a Zone 1, District L Tennessee Lion’s paperweight.

International Director Jerome Thompson spoke about how Lions need to be people who “sell dreams” and discussed the past and future of Lionism.  He presented a Certificate of Appreciation from the International President to PDG Ed Gibbons for positive membership growth and service to the community, among other things.  He also inducted four new members into the ETSU club.

King Lion Ken Gough presented ID Thompson with a Tennessee Lion’s Shirt and 2VDGE Johnson presented him with an ETSU hat and lapel pin.  A lapel pin was also presented to Dr. Nolan.

MEETING MINUTES REGULAR MEETING MARCH 3, 2016

Johnson City Lion’s Club

Meeting Minutes March 3, 2016

The Johnson City Lion’s Club met for the first regular meeting in March at the Johnson City Country Club.  King Lion Ken Gough called the meeting to order and asked Lion Tom Terry to lead the pledge of allegiance.   Lion Tim Tapp led in prayer for the meeting and the food.

Lion D.J. Naron was asked to introduce herself although it was noted that she was a member of the Johnson City Lion’s Club before moving to Pensacola Florida.  Lion D.J. introduced herself and shared the news of her engagement and upcoming marriage to a member of the Pensacola Lion’s Club.

Lion D. J. was also the winner of today’s drawing and requested the money go to the Turtle Derby.

King Lion Ken Gough gave a report regarding Lion C.B. Willis and his inability to continue coordinating Kid Sight Screenings.  A plea was issued for volunteers to take part in the project with all potential volunteers reporting to Lion Ken.  He is also setting up screenings with the Johnson City School System at this time.

Around 70 pairs of glasses were collected by PDG Ed Gibbons and Lion Tim Tapp.  There are currently 1400 pairs of glasses ready to be sent to Roanoke and a trip for a work day is being planned for April 2nd.

Robin Potter spoke to the club about the VIST (Visual Impairment Services Team) program at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.  She stated that she has 400 patients in the program that come from Knoxville, Bristol and here in Johnson City.  All of the participants are legally blind and any veteran who has been diagnosed as legally blind has access to the full benefits of the VIST program.  These veterans are also eligible for catastrophic disability resources through the V.A. This means that all services offered by the V.A. (except for dental) are available to them without a co-pay.   In addition to the complete eye exam, physical exams, assessments, benefit reviews, and support, the veteran is also eligible to participate in various rehabilitative programs such as Guide Dog Schools, Vocational Rehab Services, and services offered by the Regional VA Blind Rehabilitation Center.  She asked that we be aware of the services and promote them due to the number of veterans who may not be aware of the services.

It was announced that the next meeting will be in two weeks (March 17 2016) and will be a Zone Meeting at the Johnson City Country Club.  The ETSU Club is hosting the event.

Those in attendance today were Lions: Ken Gough, Ed Gibbons, Jerry Lonon, D.J. Naron, Billy Pike, Brian Powell, Tim Tapp, Tom Terry, and Sterling Winn.  Guests were Jane Myron (introduced by Lion Ed Gibbons) and Robin Potter (introduced by Lion Ken Gough).
