Since 1952 the annual Turtle Derby has been the Johnson City Lions Club’s biggest fundraiser.
That’s right – we race turtles. And until you’ve seen it, you won’t believe you can have this much fun – and it’s free!
In 2010, we added a new twist – mechanical toy turtles. You see, this time of year, turtles would rather be napping than racing, and sometimes the ornery little guys just won’t cooperate. So we took the hint and got some mechanical cousins to do the work for them. And, boy, is it great. Those little guys run until their batteries fall off!

Now, all this fun has a serious purpose. The money raised supports the Lions’ charitable work in our community, our region, and across the world. Each year we raise over $20,000 to provide eyeglasses to people in our community, support the Tennessee Lions Eye Center at Vanderbilt Hospital, provide disaster relief through the Lions Club International Foundation, and fund many other projects.
