MINUTES REGULAR MEETING AUGUST 17. 2017

Johnson City Lion’s Club

2nd Regular August Meeting

August 17, 2017   Johnson City Country Club

The Lions of Johnson City met for our regular meeting on the above date at the country club. PDG Paulette Bailey has sent a request for scrapbook items recording history of the Lion’s club and individual members.

Gayle Cox noted that he did a “walk thru” of the Park and noted that it looked really good. He encouraged all of us to check it out.

George Winton announced the date for the Turtle Derby as October 19th and said that all sales sheets should have been sent out by the sales manager Frank Ray.  He thanked Jeff Derby for his presence today to report on the Turtle Derby Kickoff.

Don Raines introduced Mayor David Tomita who gave a great deal of information regarding things going on in Johnson City. During this portion of the meeting Lion Mark Fox received a phone call from PP Steve Campbell and was fined $5.00. It will be determined later if PP Campbell will be fined since he knowingly called a faithful (perfect attendance) member during meeting time.  PP Campbell should have known that Lion Fox would have been seriously engaged in club business at the time of the call.  This episode provided many laughs and reminded us again how fun it is to be a Lion.

The Parks and Rec dept. is in conversation with Hugh Conlin about possible grafting of the trees.  The desire is to salvage the trees that can be saved and to plant new ones or to graft.  There is no definite answer at this time but the club was assured that all possible solutions are under consideration and they are seeking wise counsel.

Lion Ken has spoken extensively with the Parks and Rec dept. and the idea under consideration is to attempt to save the good trees and eradicate the dead or diseased trees.   It is possible to take cuttings from the older trees and graft them into new stock so that we will have part of the original trees.  The Parks and Rec Director James Ellis will be at our July meeting to discuss this.  Dennis Powell noted that new trees would cost around 1200.00

Lion Frank Ray is this month’s program chair and he introduced Bob Hall from Family Promise as today’s speaker.  Family Promise has been in existence for 17 years and attempts to keep homeless families together.  There are a variety of services that Family Promise offers.  The guests go through an interview process and have extensive case management once they are in the program.  Area churches provide housing in their buildings during the evenings and the Family Promise Day Center works with them on job skills, personal life skills, counseling, etc. if they are not working.  They also teach courses on budgeting and assist with personal budgeting.  All that they do is an attempt to get them into housing and to keep them from being homeless again.  They have a follow up program as well.

Several lions had questions after the presentation.

President Cox thanked Mr. Hall for coming and told him that he would be presented a mug after next week’s meeting.

REGULAR MEETING FEB 2, 2017

Johnson City Lion’s Club

1st February Meeting (2-2-17)

Johnson City Country Club

The Johnson City Lion’s club regular meeting for February was held on 2/2/17 at the Johnson City Country Club. Those in attendance were Lions: Jerry Lonon, Don Raines, Sterling Winn, Ken Gough, George Winton, Brian Powell, Steve Campbell, Dennis Powell, Tim Tapp, Tom Terry, Ed Gibbons, Frank Ray and Mike Errico.

The Lion Tamer collected 2.50 and the Tail Twister collected 4.50 before the meeting began. Lion Mike Errico won the drawing and requested that the winnings go to Sight Conservation.

President Steve Campbell called the meeting to order and asked Lion George Winton to lead the pledge and Lion Brian Powell to lead the prayer.

Since we did not have a speaker on this date, President Campbell took the opportunity to talk about the projects with which we are involved. He felt that the newer members of the club would especially benefit from this.

Dennis Powell discussed White Cane Days/LCIF support. Our club gives 1000.00 each year to District 12N.  This money goes to TN School for the Blind, TN School for the Deaf, Volunteer Blind Industries and Leader Dogs.

Various requests come in for sight conservation projects.

A 1000.00 donation gives our club the opportunity to nominate a Melvin Jones Fellow.

Our club has more Melvin Jones Fellows than any club in the state.

Ken Gough talked about Eyeglass Recycling. Used eyeglasses are collected from area businesses and individuals and they go to a recycling center.  The closest one is in Roanoke Va.  The glasses are sorted/recycled and sent around the world for use in Medical missions.  We take 4-5,000 pair of glasses to Roanoke twice each year.  There are 2000 ready to go for the Spring trip.

  • Ed Gibbons told us about Sight And Hearing Conservation and noted that we receive 4-5 calls each day for applications for eye exams and glasses. There is currently a waiting list that goes through April.  We purchase 5 pair each week and 300 per year.  Most candidates for the assistance are disabled or on Social Security.
  • George Winton mentioned our Christmas benevolence and the fact that we give 250.00 each year to a charity. For the past several years it has gone to God’s Corner – a reputable charity in our city.
  • Don Raines reported on Volunteer blind Industries. It was started by this club in the 1950’s.  100 blind people are employed in Morristown and several others in Watauga.  All of the Marine Corps Helmet covers are made by them as well as other military supplies.  They also produce mattresses.  They did 12 million in business last year.
  •  Other projects mentioned were our eye screening in Daycares and Kindergartens and Lion’s Park.  Tom Terry gave an overview of the eye screening and Ken Gough talked about the Park and our work on the pavilion. Revenue each year is generated by the Turtle Derby, Nuts and bolts, gum machines, pecans and memorials.  Of special note was the Dinkel Trust Fund.

The board meeting will be 2-9-17 and the next regular meeting will be 2-16-17

JOHNSON CITY LIONS CLUB PARTNERS WITH ONE ACRE CAFE’

As part of Lion’s International Week to Fight Worldwide Hunger, January 9-12, the Johnson City Lion’s Club partnered with One Acre Café in Johnson City.  The club volunteered at the Café on January 12, 2017 and served as hosts/hostesses, waiters, servers, and “busboys”.  The One Acre’ Café operates under the philosophy that everyone eats regardless of their ability to pay.  Through their Pay It Forward program, patrons can insure that another guest will be able to eat in the future.

The members of the club who participated in this volunteer service opportunity were: Steve Campbell, Becky Campbell, Theresa Gibbons, Ed Gibbons, Ken Gough, Brian Powell, Don Raines, Frank Ray, Tim Tapp, and George Winton.  Trevor Passafume from the ETSU Lion’s Club joined the Johnson City Club to help with this project.

This project, and several others throughout the year, are part of a series of Centennial Service Projects that Lion’s International is undertaking.  It is estimated that service projects in the last year have impacted 100 million people throughout the world.

JOHNSON CITY CLUB’S JANUARY PROJECT

Hello Everyone,

In the minutes that I just sent out I forgot to include the name of the project for January.  Lion’s International has announced that January 9-15 is the Worldwide Week of Service to Fight Hunger.  We are going to do a service project on January 12th and we need optimal participation.  It may be that we want to discuss getting the ETSU club or the Elizabethton Club in on this.  If not, I will probably have to secure a few more.

The project will be serving at the One Acre Café on Walnut Street.  We will need to be there at 10 a.m. for initial training and then, depending on what shift you would like to work, we will go or stay.  The shifts are from 10:00 a.m until 11:00 (set up), 11:00-1:00, and 1:00-2:30.  The place really starts getting busy around 11:50.   Please let me know if you will go ahead and put this on your calendar so that we can have a good idea of a number.  If Johnson City schools are out for bad weather on that day, then the café is closed.

This will be a big help to the café and to people in the community who are hungry.  We are planning on making a donation to their Pay It Forward lunch program that enables people without money to eat.  Those who eat and can’t afford it are expected to volunteer in some way.  I will have more information at the December 15th meeting.

This will also be a great publicity event for Lion’s International and the J.C. Lion’s Club.  I would say that we should have some membership forms on hand for that day.

Have a great weekend.

Tim Tapp

On January 12th our club will be doing a community project in the spirit of the 100th anniversary of Lion’s International.  Lion’s International has deemed the week of January 9-15 as                                                      and has encouraged all clubs to do something to help with hunger during that week.  We will be waiting tables, serving as hosts, and other duties at One Acre Café on the 12th.  We will also be making a donation to their Pay It Forward campaign.  We will all need to go through training at 10 a.m. that day but can choose from two shifts.  11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 1:00-2:30.

We are also encouraged to invite friends and family to eat there on that day.  More details will be provided in December.

Lion Brian Powell introduced Chaplain Eileen Zoellner who talked to us about the “Adopt A Cop” program in Johnson City and around the country. She stated that she was overwhelmed with the positive response from this project.  She had hoped for 150 or so participants but stated that over 1400 have signed up.  The program enlists prayer partners for police as well as giving the public the opportunity to give gifts and thank you notes to the “adopted” officer.  There are also events planned where the police and the community can get together for picnics, outings, etc.  The prayer partner does not know who their officer is unless the officer chooses for that to be disclosed.  Several questions were asked about the community, community policing, and the success of this program.

King Lion Steve Campbell thanked her for sharing with us and presented her with a classic Lion’s coffee mug in appreciation.

With no further business to come before the club the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully,

Tim Tapp
