Vision screening, here we come!

Jim Paveglio performs a vision screening

Earlier this week we performed screenings for 71 children at the ETSU Learning Center. With the newly-purchased camera and the additional training our photographers have received, these screenings have been highly successful and we are most happy with the results.

Our intention is to conduct screenings every Wednesday at daycare centers, kindergartens and similar venues.  Members, now that you know when screenings will be held, you can arrange your time to take part.

You will be hearing more as we get the scheduling done. If you are available , even occasionally, our experienced photographers – John Merriss, Jim Paveglio, Paul Easlic and Sterling Winn – will be available to train you.

 – C.B. Willis and Dennis Powell

Eyeglass Recycling Day, Spring 2012

Incoming President John Merriss reads prescriptions

East Tennessee Lions trekked to Roanoke for our semi-annual workday at the Eyeglass Recycling Center on Saturday March 24, and 3 Johnson City Lions joined the effort.  Recycling Chairman Ken Gough, incoming President John Merriss and new member Jim Paveglio got up way too early, drove through dark and rain (no sleet or snow this year, luckily) and went to work about 9:00.  They took 2,150 pairs of glasses collected by the JC Lions over the last 6 months, which joined a big pile waiting to be sorted and recycled.

Jim Paveglio with Harry Ennis

Lion Ken went to work with a will, assembling a store room full of shipping boxes.  Lion John likes running the prescription reading machines and spent his day there.  Lion Jim, being new to the operation, got the grand tour from Kingsport Lion and East Tennessee Recycling Coordinator Harry Ennis, and then learned to use the readers.  Meanwhile a group from the Knoxville area was hard at work on the first sorting operation, putting glasses into 3 piles – usable glasses, sunglasses, and broken frames.

The usable glasses are thoroughly cleaned before prescription reading and sorting, after which comes packing and shipping.  Broken glasses largely pay for the operation of the recycling center – many of the metals in the frames, in particular the gold, are very valuable, and find a ready market.  Sunglasses are sent primarily to tropical countries.

First sort - separating broken frames from usable glasses

The party broke up around 3:00.  We left behind hundreds of pairs of glasses ready to pack and ship, a roomful of shipping boxes, several hundred pounds of broken frames ready for recycling, and a much smaller pile of unsorted glasses than we found.  Time to prepare for the next trip in October 2012!

This can only be done at that (next week’s) meeting so please come and be prepared to vote. Hopefully, a slate of officers for next year will be announced and It will not be, in the words of Lion Gibbons, “ absolutely the very worst slate ever nominated in the history of this club”. But don’t hold your breath.

King Lion Campbell adjourned the meeting at 12:59 PM.

NEXT REGULAR MEETING:  Thursday, March 15th , 2012

Meeting notes from 3/1/2012 regular meeting

Johnson City Lions Club regular noon meeting notes.  (LCI No. 5093)
Date: Thursday, 03/01/2012
Meeting Place: THE JOHNSON CITY COUNTRY CLUB

 (18 members present – 0 guests)

The meeting was called to order at 12:26 PM by president, King Lion Dr. Steve Campbell who called on PDG Lion Dennis Powell to ask the blessing and (the newest) Lion Jim Paveglio to lead the pledge.

Lion tamer, Lion CB Willis said, “No guests” and “Lion Pike won the drawing” and he, Lion Pike, after carefull and labored consideration donated 100% of his winnings to, “Eyeglasses”.

Lion Ken Gough announced that, so far, six Lions (Billy Pike, Don Raines, Jim Paveglio, Steve Campbell, Ken Gough and John Merriss) will be heading out early (6AM) on Saturday, the 24th of this month to herd glasses at the Roanoke Recycling center which is a lot more fun and a lot easier than herding cats. All Lions are invited; sign up if you think you can handle all the excitement, good food and fellowship.

King Lion read two thank-you letters; one from Deborah Wilkerson thanking the club for her new eye glasses and one from District Governor Chuck Bailey thanking our club for the work we did to help the victims of the tornadoes last year.

Lion Ed Gibbons was congratulated and consoled for being elected 2nd vice president of the district for FYE June 30th  2013 meaning he will be the District Governor  for FYE June 30th 2015. It was rumored that there were others who had agreed to be nominated from the floor but after they heard PDG Lion Powell’s nominating speech they all withdrew their eligibility. After that send up Lion Ed was heard to say, “Did I really do all those things?” Congratulations LION Ed. You did and we’re sure you’ll be a great District Governor.

Speaking of next year’s District 2nd VP, he introduced today’s speaker, the new  Boys and Girls Club of Johnson City/Washington County, Robin Crumley.  Somehow Robin squeezed a one hour presentation into 15 spirited minutes telling us about the “Positive Place for Kids” plus Q & A. Robin said the program is designed to give kids 6 to 18 (1st through 12th grade) a safe place to go after school for fun, learning and other opportunities, a full schedule of activities and age appropriate services for as little as $2.00 a week. Anyone who knows a youngster (or several youngsters) who could be served by this important community organization, call Robin at 461-4560, ext. 23.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:57 PM.

The next regular meeting will be in three weeks: Thursday, March 22, 2012.

The next Board of Directors Meeting will be next Thursday, March 8th, 2012.

Lions Learning Retreat, January 13-15, 2012.

Club Secretary’s personal  observations after attending the 9th Annual Lions Learning Retreat held on January 13th, in Manchester, TN with Lions Paul Easlic and Sterling Winn.

Although I can’t possibly tell you everything I learned I can tell you this – it gave us a chance to stand back and see the big picture. A tremendous benefit that comes from participating in Learning Seminars, Conventions, and District and State service projects is the interaction with great Lions who are challenged with the same obstacles we have to deal with and discover what they’re doing about them.  Let me give you a couple of examples:

Soon you’re going to be hearing about a Vision Van. What is a vision van? This is something that came up in one of the seminars – the Goals and Vision Seminar. It’s something Past District Governors’ Wendy Cain, Jim McFarland and Dave Crawford and others have been working on for several months. It’s a fully equipped mobile van that will be used to provide eye exams and actually make new glasses for qualified, indigent citizens in one day’s time; it will have the capacity to serve several hundred people a day. It was donated to District 12-N by Remote Area Medical and is being refurbished so that hopefully it will be on display in its renewed embodiment at the District Convention in in February. Bottom line it will allow people to be examined, receive a prescription and obtain a new pair of glasses in one visit for about half of what it costs now (at least that’s the plan). Who knows, someday maybe we’ll have a Vision Van right here in Johnson City.

In another seminar I learned about something the Lafayette Club is doing to build membership called a membership dinner. The model for this comes from a club in Michigan and it has proven to be amazingly effective here in east Tennessee. The Lafayette Club has been doing this for four years with  increasing success each year. The last dinner they held was attended by 14 guests and ALL FOURTEEN signed up for membership and paid their dues for the first 6 months at the dinner.

Here’s why I bring up these two examples. Like all clubs we have to deal with roadblocks to achieving goals and in the process we sometimes can get bogged with the negatives. We can use these two examples which I wouldn’t have known anything about if I hadn’t been fortunate to attend this district 12-N event.

Melvin Jones was a visionary but if he had been the only one Lionism, which is the largest service organization in the world today, would have been still born in 1917. Back in 1946 somebody had a vision for this club and they continue to bless our organization. Being a Lion isn’t for everyone and everyone that becomes a Lion will not be a visionary. Some won’t be leaders and that’s OK because the right percentage will be if, and this is a big and important if, if we ask the right people to join us – not just one person and not just one time but many right people as often as necessary.

let’s follow the Nike imperative and “just do it”.

Anyone reading this who is not a Lion but would like to explore becoming one please call or write me jmerriss@readersmart.com (423-943-6756)
