JC Lions Go To Roanoke

Twice a year, East Tennessee Lions make the trek to the Roanoke Eyeglass Recycling Center for a workday preparing eyeglasses for shipment to missions around the world.  On Nov. 10, Lions John Merriss and Ken Gough joined over a dozen Lions from Kingsport and the Knoxville area for the Fall 2012 trip.

Lousy weather is the norm for these trips.  If it’s not raining, it’s snowing, and if it’s not snowing, the mountains are covered in fog.  But this year the weather was warm and sunny with not a cloud in the sky, and we enjoyed a beautiful drive through the Virginia Highlands.

King Lion John Merriss hard at work sorting glasses

The back of Ken’s station wagon was filled to the ceiling with 4,000 pairs of eyeglasses collected in the last 6 months, an all-time record for the Johnson City club.  The numbers have increased steadily over the last few years; this year we will collect well over 6,000 pairs.  Lion John headed for the sorting room, where just-received glasses are separated.  Damaged glasses are sent for metals recycling, and usable glasses are sent for a thorough cleaning.  The room was piled high when we arrived, and even our hard-working volunteers coulnd’t sort them all.  Lion Ken has become “the box guy” and spends his time building packing and shipping boxes, a chore which Center Director Merle Hash greatly appreciates.  Ken left a store room completely filled with shipping boxes and also put together over 200 packing boxes.  Then he took a well-earned nap on the trip home!

Kingsport Lion Hary Ennis and a Lion from Claiborne County read prescriptions

Our next Recycling Workday will be in late March or April, 2013.  Keep collecting those glasses, and plan to join us!

Tail Twister Ken Gough  reminded everyone about the eyeglass sorting trip to Roanoke on Saturday, November 10th.  To date, some 4,000 glasses have been collected.  That is a new club record!  Any more glasses for this trip need to be dropped off to Lion Ken at 710 W. Walnut Street by Tuesday.  All lions are welcome to attend, and Lion Ken promises that we will not run out of gas on the way.

Lion Turtle King George Winton announced that 449 turtles were sold, one short of our goal.  Expenses need to be turned in to VDG Ed Gibbons.  The bills for the sponsorship have been sent out, with a projected net profit of $20,000.

Meeting notes for October 18th regular meeting

Regular meeting of the Johnson City Lions Club held October 18th, 2012 at the Johnson City Country Club, Johnson City, TN 37604

(13 members, 2 guests present)

The meeting was called to order at 12:23 PM. VDG Lion Ed Gibbons asked the blessing and Lion Brandon Johnson led the pledge to the flag.

Lion Tamer Lion CB Willis introduce Lion Lynda Gochenouer’s guest, Jennifer Finley and the club’s guest Lion D.J Naron, a great former member of this club and now a member in Pensacola, FL.

Lion CB then reported that 27 kids were screened through the Kids Sight program yesterday at the Stepping Stones pre-school yesterday in downtown Johnson City with Lion Sterling Winn doing all the camera w work. He did a great job and didn’t scare any of the kids this time.

Finally, Lion Tamer CB also announced that the 35 cartons of pecans that have been ordered will be arriving during the first week of November.  He encouraged members to sell at least one more pecan than did than last year. That should be easy.

At this point Lion CB sat down. Guess he was exhausted because he didn’t announce the winner of the drawing. Maybe he’ll tell us next time.

Turtle King Lion George Winton announced that 445 turtle sponsorships have been sold, just 5 short of the club goal of 450, with the Turtle Derby being tomorrow.  The turtles are “lubricated” and ready to go.  Door prizes are also ready, including a bicycle.  Set up starts at Brooks Gym (ETSU Campus) at 5 P.M.

Lion Ken Gough encouraged all Lions to attend the glasses recycling trip to Roanoke on Saturday, November 10th.  Any glasses that need to be sorted need to be dropped off to Lion Ken at 710 W. Walnut St. ASAP.

VDG Eddy Gibbons announced that Lion Jayne Myron’s induction is slated for the first meeting in November.

Lion President John Merriss introduced today’s amazing guest speaker, Samantha Legge.  Samantha is a 41-year-old, married, stay-at-home mother of four young children (ages 2, 4, 6, and 8).  After a series of trials and tribulations, Samantha decided that she would turn her hobby of running into a way to provide scholarships for children to attend Doe River Gorge Ministry’s Summer Camp.  On November 4th, Samantha will be running the New York City Marathon as the very last runner.  She is asking for people to contribute a penny for every other runner she passes on her 26.2 mile journey.  Her theory is “pass a runner, pay a penny, a child goes to camp, and God gets the glory.”  Such an uplifting  message!  Further information on the “a penny a pass” initiative can be found at http://www.apennyapass.com/, as well as ways to donate.  Her email address is:  samantharlegge@yahoo.com .

The meeting was officially adjourned at 12:54PM.

Also, Lion Riehn noted that it is now entirely permissible to nominate a Melvin Jones Foundation award and elect the Measles program, which is a humanitarian program, for the $1,000.00 cash award to be  donated to that project in the honorees name. Lion Ron said he can be reached at 865-690-2557 or 865-773-3795 for further information on how to do this.

The meeting was officially adjourned at 1:01.

The next regular meeting will be October 18, one day before the Turtle Derby.

There will be a Board Meeting next Thursday STSP.
