Minutes of the Board of Directors Meeting June 11, 2020

The Board of the Johnson City Lion’s Club met for the June board meeting on June 11, 2020 at the J.C. Country Club.  Those present for the meeting were: Jerry Lonon, George Winton, Tim Tapp, Steve Campbell, Debbie Shipley, Doris Kaifa, Ed Gibbons, and Ken Gough.

The meeting was called to order by President Debbie Shipley and she asked Ken Gough for a financial report.  Ken noted that there was a balance of 6,326.82 in the Admin fund and 29,375 in the Projects Fund.  Steve shared that we received a refund to the Turtle Derby Fund from the State of Tennessee.  Ed Gibbons made the motion to accept the report and Steve Campbell provided a second to that motion.  All were in favor and the motion carried.

President Shipley gave congratulations to Ed for getting his eye exam and eyeglass case load caught up.  Ed noted that 25 exams and glasses were provided and that was a tremendous help.  He stated that he would like to have the Appalachian Miles for Smiles Van at least twice a year and that it was a big help.  Ed requested that a gift of $500 be given to the Appalachian Miles for Smiles.  A motion was made by Ken Gough and a second was provided by George Winton.  All were in favor and the motion carried.

The proposed budget was presented by Ken Gough and the dues structure was discussed.  The dues are currently 37.50 per month.  The proposal being made is that the dues be 17.00 per month with no meals.  If a member decides to eat it would be 12.50 per meal added to the 17.00.  If a member decided to eat at both meetings the total cost would be 42.00 per month.  Board members would pay an extra 12.50 per month should they decide to eat.  A vote of the membership is required for this change to take place.  Some members had requested considering this change because they did not eat or did not want to eat but were being charged the full amount.

Ed Gibbons made a motion to send our yearly LCIF donation before July 1st.  Steve Campbell provided a second.  All were in favor and the motion carried.

We will have officer induction on June 18th and all members (especially incoming officers) are encouraged to be present. We will have a regular meeting on July 2nd.

Respectfully Submitted,

Tim Tapp – Secretary

The Vision Van Pays a Visit to Johnson City

What a great day we had with the Appalachian Miles for Smiles eye clinic this past Saturday. We had the clinic in the basement of my office and the vision van behind my building. Everyone was screened and wore a mask before being let in because of the pandemic. Pictured are some of the volunteers, Lions Doris Kaifa, Justin Mitchell, Debbie Shipley, Dr. George Winton, Dr. Judaun Allison, and Ed Gibbons. Not pictured is Lions Ken Gough and Steve Campbell. Ken and Steve worked from 8:30 till 12:30. Doris and Debbie worked from 12 to 3.  Even Lion Billy Pike showed up for support. We screened about 25 of the applications I had on hand. That caught me up as I was about 40 applications behind. A big thank you to Lion Dr. Judaun Allison and Dr. Dana Grist for working all day and Lion Justin Mitchell for working till 12:30 in the vision van. Of course, the vision van had their 12 volunteers that really put everything in place for us. We have now a good relationship with Appalachian Miles for Smiles Vision Van and I hope to get them back maybe twice a year.

Thank you again for all the volunteers taking your time off on a Saturday. You made the part of Lionism doing what Lions do – We Serve.

PDG Ed Gibbons
