Johnson City Lions Club Regular Meeting Minutes August 19, 2021

The Johnson City Lions Club met for its regular meeting on Thursday August 19th, 2021, at 12 noon at the Johnson City Country Club.  Present at the meeting were King Lion Steve Campbell (President), Lion Debbie Shipley, Lion Ed Gibbon, Lion Judy Vanlandingham, Lion George Winton, Lion Ken Gough, Lion Steven Brown, Guest speaker Rev. Aaron Murphy, CEO Good Samaritan Ministries, Inc. and Lion Doris Kaifa (Secretary).

The meeting was called to order by President Steve Campbell.   Lion Debbie Shipley led the opening prayer. Prayer was offered for Don Raines and all members. The drawing was won by Lion Debbie Shipley. She donated the money to the Turtle Derby. President Campbell asked for announcements.

Lion Debbie Shipley announced that the Erwin Club will have its first fund raising event (yard sale) on September 3rd in downtown Erwin.

Lion Ken Gough announced he will be sorting out glasses soon. He also wants the club to think about ways to recycle the glasses since taking it to Roanoke is not possible at this time.   Lion George Winton announced that the Turtle Derby will be in October. More information on the Turtle Derby will be provided later. Lion Ed Gibbons announced that eye screening will begin in Unico County next month with Head Start.

Board meeting for next month is canceled due to board members traveling. Secretary Doris Kaifa will be traveling to Africa/Liberia to see her sick mother (please keep her in prayer).

President Steve Campbell asks Lion Doris Kaifa to introduce the guest speaker. Lion Doris Introduced guest speaker Rev. Aaron Murphy, CEO of Good Samaritan Ministries, Inc.

Rev. Murphy give a brief history of the organization and its purpose. Members were allowed to asked questions.

The meeting was ended with a group photo with the guest speaker.

Board of Directors Meeting

August 12, 2021

The Board of Directors’ meeting was called to order at 12:20pm at the Johnson City Country Club.  Board member present were:  King Lion Steve Campbell, Lion Ken Gough, Lion George Winton, Lion Jerry Lonon, and Lion Ed Gibbons.  King Lion Steve called on Lion Ken Gough to present the financial statements for the club (statements attached).  Lion Ed Gibbons made the motion to accept the Treasurer’s report, seconded by Lion George Winton.  Motion approved.

New Business:

A discussion was held about the 2021 Turtle Derby.  We requested Lion Ed Gibbons to check with the Boys and Girls Club to see if October 9, 2021 would be a possible date for the Turtle Derby.  If not, Lion Ed will check on October 16th or 23rd.  King Turtle George Winton recommended that all Lions start selling Turtles now!  Each turtle sponsorship will be $50.

Lion Ken Gough informed the board that we need a plan to get rid of the large amount of eyeglasses we have accumulated.  Suggestions were made to find a recyclers’ business close to our area.  Lions Ed and Jerry will inquire about what other clubs are doing with their eyeglasses.  Lion Ken will also contact Lions International for their suggestions.

Johnson City Lions Club Regular Meeting Minutes August 5, 2021

The Johnson City Lions Club met for its regular meeting on Thursday August 5th, 2021, at 12 noon at the Johnson City Country Club.  Present at the meeting were King Lion Steve Campbell (President), District Governor Paulette Bailey, Lion Debbie Shipley, Lion Ed Gibbon, Lion Judy Vanlandingham, Lion Chaitra Bommegowda, Lion Judaun Alison, Lion George Winton, Lion Ken Gough, Lion Steve Campbell, Lion Charles Green, Lion Carolyn Rinehart, visiting Lion from Dandridge, Lion Steven Brown and Lion Doris Kaifa (Secretary).

The meeting was called to order by President Steve Campbell.   Lion Ed Gibbon led the opening prayer. Prayer was offered for Don Raines and all members. President Campbell asked Lion Ed Gibbon to introduce his guest. Lion Ed Gibbons Introduced Lion Steven Brown who is transferring from the Dandridge Lions Club to the Johnson City Lions Club. Also, visiting was Lion Carolyn Rinehart from the Dandridge Lions club. Lion Carolyn announced and passed out applications for their upcoming 42nd Annual Charity Golf Tournament, set for Saturday September 11th, 2021.

Lion Debbie announced that the club won 3rd place in the District Raffles draw. Which means the club made $212.50 from tickets sales for commission and $100 toward a Melvin Jones Award.

Lion Debbie Shipley announced that the Erwin Lions Club is now a charter club with 26 members. Their first fundraising project is a garage sale which is set for September 3rd   in Erwin.   District Governor Paulette will be visiting the club. More update to follow.

Lion Ken Gough announced the drawing was won by Judaun Alison. She donated the money to the Turtle Derby. Lion George Winton announced that the Turtle Derby will be in October. More information to follow. Lion Ed Gibbons announced that pecans will be ordered around the first of October. More information to follow. Lion Ed Gibbons Introduced the District Governor, Paulette Bailey.

District Governor Paulette Bailey thanked the Johnson City Club for doing amazing things and all the hard work and effort in making the Erwin club a reality. She indicated how proud she is of the club for sponsoring four (4) other clubs.

Governor Paulette said she would like to recognize our newest Lions and the longest-serving Lion. She recognized Lion Dennis Power for 65 years of service.  She donated two collected pins including her special district pin to the club. The Governor also highlighted the following:

*Current membership fees of $35 is waived through December.

* The district approved 3 different scholarships to all Lions, Learning opportunity

* Scholarships for US/Canada Forum

* Food packing schedule for December in Sevierville

* October 23rd is cabinet meeting

* Encourage the club to apply for the “Club Excellence Award”

*Convention is February 18 and 19 In Knoxville/ Holiday Inn.

The club voted and donated $1000 toward White Cane Day.

President Steve Campbell gave the governor a yellow Lion T-shirt as a gift from the club.

The budget for 2021-2022 was voted upon and approved by the body.

The meeting ended with a group photo with the Governor.

Johnson City Lions Club Board Meeting Minutes July 8, 2021 

The Johnson City, Lion club met for its Board meeting on Thursday July 8th, 2021 at 12 noon at the Johnson City Country Club.  Present at the meeting were King Lion Steve Campbell, Lion Ken Gough, Lion George Winton, Lion Ed Gibbons, Lion Jerry Lonon and Lion Doris Kaifa (Secretary).

The meeting was called to order by King Lion Steve Campbell.

Committee and Project Report:

The President asked for minutes and project reports. Lion Ken Gough (Treasurer) presented the budget report. The budget was voted on and accepted by the broad. Lion Ed Gibbons and Lion George Winton second the motion.

The budget for 2021 and 2022 fiscal year was set by the Board.

A motion was made by Lion Ken Gough to permit the Club to donate five hundred ($500) dollars to the Boys and Girls Club for their assistance with Turtle Derby last year, 2020.  The motion was seconded by Lion George Winton. It was voted on by the Board and approved.  Five hundred ($500) dollars was donated to the Boys and Girls Club.

A second motion was made by Lion Ed Gibbon to donate sixteen hundred ($1600) dollars to Miles for Smiles for their assistance eye screening in May 2021. Donated $2,000 for the purchase of the machine for Miles for Smiles.  The motion was seconded by Lion George Winton. It was voted on by the Board and approved.  Sixteen hundred ($1600) dollars was donated to Miles for Smiles.

We donated $2,000 for the purchase of the machine for Miles for Smiles.

$28.10 reimbursement to Debbie Shipley for postage from Projects Miscellaneous account.

Three members submitted their resignations due to school and work schedules: Tim Tapp, William A. Pike and Justin Mitchell. The board accepted their resignations.

The board voted for the club to go back to two regular meetings schedule and one board meeting starting August, 2021.

Our next meeting will be August 5th, 2021.  Our guest and speaker will be our District Governor Paulette Bailey.  Please mark your calendars so we can have a good attendance for this meeting!

Johnson City Lions Pecan Sales $12,376.80 in November and December 2020.

Johnson City Lions Club donated $250 for Christmas Benevolence for God’s Corner, December 2020.

Johnson City Lions Club donated $100 to Second Harvest Food Bank, December 2020.

Feeding the Hungry- December 2020 – Johnson City Noon Club Delivered 38 food boxes To Kingsport, Rogersville, East Hawkins, ETSU,
Elizabethton and Johnson County/Mountain City. All clubs distributed food boxes per their choice of donation. Johnson City donated to Good Samaritan.

Johnson City Club Nuts and Bolts sales of $2,366.50 through June 2021.

Johnson City Lions volunteered for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign. December 2020.

We have collected over 10,000 pairs of glasses, ready for Roanoke, Va. through June 2021.

Johnson City had expenses for Sight & Hearing Conservation in the amount of $6,446.00 through June 2021.

We have supplied 48 pairs of prescription eyeglasses and 48 eye exams from July 2020 through May 1st, 2021.

Johnson City Lions scheduled a Miles for Smiles Vision and Diabetes Screening on May 22, 2021 at the Summit Building in Johnson City serving about 30+.

Johnson City Club chartered a new Branch club in Erwin, Tennessee with 13 members April through June 2021.

Johnson City Club contributed $4,500.00 to the Summer Reading Program for the Unicoi County Library May 2021 and contributed $1,500.00 towards building the Teen Center at the Unicoi County Library to help attract a new Leo Club for Erwin.

Johnson City Club members helped Unicoi County Library replace book shelfs, June 2021.

Johnson City Club members helped with a Celebration of Life Cookout at The Carver Center June 2021.

Johnson City Lions Club Board Meeting Minutes June 10, 2021

The Johnson City, Lion club met for its Broad meeting on Thursday June 10, 2021 at 12 noon at the Johnson City Country Club.  Present at the meeting were Lion Debbie Shipley (President), Lion Ken Gough, Lion George Winton, Lion Ed Gibbons, and Lion Doris Kaifa (Secretary).

The meeting was called to order by President Debbie Shipley.

Committee and Project Report:

The President asked for committee and project reports. Lion Ken Gough (Treasurer) presented the budget report. The budget was voted upon and accepted by the Broad. Lion Ed Gibbons and Lion George Winton seconded the motion.

The president thanked the club for the $250 grant money received from the district which was donation to the Good Samaritan Ministries for its Celebrate Life Yaun Mission event on June 5th.

The president asked Lion Doris to give an update of the event. Lion Doris thank the club for its financial support and describe the success of the event with some heartfelt pictures.

President Debbie asked the Board for approval to purchase a banner for the New Erwin’s Lion Club. The motion was approved by Lion Ed Gibbon and seconded by Lion George Winton.

Johnson City Lion Club Regular Meeting Minutes June 3rd, 2021

The Johnson City Lion Club met for its regular meeting on Thursday June 3rd, 2021 at 12 noon at the Johnson City Country Club.  Present at the meeting were Lion Debbie Shipley (President), Lion Ed Gibbon and Theresa Gibon, Josh Gibbons,  Lion Judy Vanlandingham, Lion Chaitra Bommegowda and family, Lion Judaun Alison,   Lion George Winton, Lion Ken Gough, Lion Steve Campbell, Lion David Beerman and Lion Doris Kaifa (Secretary).

The meeting was called to order by President Debbie Shipley.   Lion Steve Campbell led the opening prayer. Prayer was offered for all members.

President Shipley presided over her last meeting as president and introduce the president elect, Lion Steve Campbell. She asked everyone to support the incoming President.

Lion Doris Kaifa announced the drawing and President Debbie Shipley won the drawing. She donated the money to the Turtle Derby.

President Debbie Shipley thanked everyone for coming out on May 22nd to help with the Vision Van. She reported that about nineteen (19) people were assisted with eye exam and glasses.

A Special Presentation of the MELVIN JONES FELLOW AWARD was made to the secretary, Lion Doris Kaifa for her dedicated service to the club. Lion Ed Gibbon also presented A Melvin Jones Fellow AWARD to his wife for 52 years, Theresa Gibbons for her support over the years.

President Debbie Shipley introduced the District Governor Mildred Burke. District Governor Mildred Burke thanked the Johnson City Club for all the hard work and effort in making the Erwin club a reality.

Governor Mildren Burke also give a $250.00 check from Lion Club International Foundation (LCIF) to the Johnson City Lion Club for food project.

President Debbie brough in a special cake and gave out several awards to club members in appreciation for their exceptional hard work for the past year. Among those to received award were, Lion Ed Gibbon and family, Lion Steve Campbell, Lion Chaitra Bommegowda and family, Lion George Winton, Lion Kim Gough, Lion Don Raines, and Lion Doris Kaifa (Secretary).  Everyone enjoy the cake.

Erwin:

The Johnson City Club and the District Governor Mildred Burke met at the Erwin Library to induct new members.  Lion Ed Gibbon inducted six (6) New members, including the President.

Johnson City Lion Club Regular Meeting Minutes May 6, 2021

The Johnson City Lion Club met for its regular meeting on Thursday May 6th, 2021 at 12 noon at the Johnson City Country Club.  Present at the meeting were Lion Debbie Shipley (President), Lion Jerry Lonon, Lion Ed Gibbons, Lion Charles Green, Lion George Winton, Lion Ken Gough, Lion Judaun Alison, Lion Chaitra Bommegowda  (Virtual/zoom) and Lion Doris Kaifa (Secretary).

The meeting was called to order by President Debbie Shipley.  President Debbie Shipley led the opening prayer. Prayer was offered for all members. It was great to see Lion Jerry Lonon back, after being hospitalized.

President Shipley CONGRATULATED the club for presenting $1500.00 on Tuesday 5/4/2021 to the Erwin Library to assisted with their Teen Center. The club made Headline News on WJHL and WCYB for the presentation.

President Shipley reminded everyone about their raffle tickets money which is due in June.

President Shipley reported to the club that the District 12-N Convention went well. Lion Steve Campbell, Lion Ed Gibbons, and Lion Doris Kaifa attended the Convention.

Lion Ed Gibbon presented Lion Debbie Shipley with a Service Award from the District Governor and International President.

President Shipley talked about the new Lion Club to be started in Erwin. Currently there are twelve (12) members who are signed up.  It is still in a working progress. They are working on getting 20 members.  She asked members to be opened in helping mentor the new coming club in Erwin.

President Shipley mentioned that the Vision Van will be in Johnson City on May 22nd for eye screening. Lion Ed Gibbons will send out address for that day for anyone who wants to help.

Announcements:

President Debbie Shipley announced that she will be having a party for all members of the club on June 3rd, next regular meeting. Awards will be given on that day. She is encouraging everyone to attend.

The president announced that Broad meeting will be on next week Thursday May 13thth.

Minutes of the Johnson City Lion Club Board Meeting April 8th, 2021

The Johnson City Lion Club met for its Board meeting on Thursday April 8th, 2021 at 12 noon at the Johnson City Country Club. Present at the meeting were Lion Debbie Shipley (President), Lion Don Raines, Lion George Winton, Lion Ken Gough, Lion Steve Campbell, Lion Chaitra Bommegowda, Guest Lion Daniel Marney Elkins and Lion Doris Kaifa (Secretary).
The meeting was called to order by President Debbie Shipley. Lion Steve Campbell led the opening prayer. Prayer was offered for the sick, Jerry Lonon and all members.
President Shipley when over the District Grant for feeding the hungry. The board voted that the money goes to Good Samaritan Ministries for its Celebrate Life Program to feed the poor.
President Shipley reported that the District is collecting toiletries for the Military. Items include toothbrushes, toothpaste, razers, Christmas Card, etc.
Congratulation! President Shipley report that The Johnson City Lion Club was one of the top First members to complete and turn in their Diabetes awareness package.
The State convention will be held in Nashville, April 29-May 1st, 2021.
President Shipley talked about the new Lion Club to start soon in Erwin. The Club is still working on getting 20 members. Currently 10 Community members are in progress. The exciting news is the Director of the Erwin Library has sign up to be the future President.
Lion Ken Gough inducted New Member Lion Chaitra Bommegowda into the Johnson City Club.
We welcome her EXCITINGLY!!
President Shipley Introduced Lion Daniel Marney Elkins from Delaware. He serves as the 2nd vice District Governor of the 22-D in Delaware. He is the new Club Development Consultant for Lions Clubs International.
Lion Daniel Elkins congratulated the Johnson City Lion Club for being one of the most organized club he had attended. He encouraged and praised the establishment of the Erwin Club by the Johnson City Club.
He encouraged the Johnson City Lion Club to help sponsor the Erwin Library Projects. The projects include Summer Reading Program and A Teen Center. Lion Daniel personally offer to assist with $500 toward the cause.
The Club voted to assist the Erwin Library financially with $4000 for its needed projects. More details will be presented at next meeting.
The president announced that meeting will be on next Thursday May 6th.

President Shipley went over the Johnson City Annual Report 2020/2021. See attachment for review.

President Shipley presented new officers for the coming year. New officers were voted upon and accepted for the 2021/2022 year.

President Shipley reminded the club that the District 12-N Convention will be held on April 9th and 10th, 2021.

The State convention will be held in Nashville, April 29-May 1st, 2021.

Johnson City Lion Club Board Meeting Minutes March 11th, 2021

The Johnson City Lions Club Board meeting was held on Thursday, March 11th, 2021 at 12 noon at the Johnson City Country Club. Present at the meeting were Lion Debbie Shipley (President), Lion Ken Gough, Lion George Winton, Lion Ed Gibbons, Lion Steve Campbell, Lion Jerry Lonon, Lion Don Raines and Lion Doris Kaifa (Secretary).

The meeting was called to order by President Debbie Shipley.

Committee and Project Report:

The President asked for committee and project reports. Lion Ken Gough (Treasurer) presented the financial report. The report was accepted by the board.

The slate of officers for the next fiscal year was approved by acclamation. The election will be held at the next regular meeting on April 1, 2021.

The president appointed a committee to nominate members for the Melvin Jones Award and Lion of the Year. Committee members appointed were Lion Ken Gough, Ed Gibbons and George Winton.

President Debbie distributed raffle tickets to each member to be sold for the District 12N Charities Reverse Raffle.

The District 12N Convention is April 8th & 9th. President Debbie Shipley, Lion Ed Gibbons, Lion Steve Campbell and Lion Doris Kaifa will be in attendance. The board agreed that the $37.00 convention fee will be paid for those members attending.

New Business:

The informational meetings for the proposed Erwin Lions Club are Monday March 15th at 5pm and Tuesday March 16 at 2pm. All members are encouraged to attend.

Next regular meeting is April 1th , 2021.

Johnson City Lions Club Regular Meeting Minutes February 4, 2021

The Johnson City Lions Club met for its regular meeting on Thursday February 4, 2021 at 12 noon at the Johnson City Country Club.  Present at the meeting were Lion Debbie Shipley (President), Lion Ed Gibbons , Lion Jerry Lonon, Lion George Winton, Lion Ken Gough,  Lion Steve Campbell, Lion Judaun Allison and Lion Doris Kaifa (Secretary).

The meeting was called to order by President Debbie Shipley.  Lion Steve Campbell led the opening prayer. Prayer was offered for sick members and all members.

President Shipley presented Lion Steve Campbell with a pin for bringing in two (2) new members last year.

President Shipley asked the club to start thinking about electing new officers for the coming year.  She suggested that anyone who is interested should send in their name before March.

President Debbie reminded the club to complete the Diabetes Awareness survey and email the results to her to be send, to the District Governor for entering the drawing at the convention.

Congratulations!! To the Johnson City club for making headline in the February District 12-N News & Views. President Debbie thanks Lion George Winton for organizing the Salvation Army Bell Ringing.

The president asked the club to encourage new members to join as things start to improve after the Covid-19 pandemic to increase our membership.

President Shipley reminded the club that the District 12-N Convention will be held on April 9 and 10, 2021. She indicated that all reservations must be made by March 22, 2021.

The State convention will be held in Nashville, April 29-May 1, 2021.

February 11th is the district meeting.  If anyone is interested in attending, please contact President Debbie Shipley.

President Shipley talked about the new Lions Club being organized in Erwin. She asked members to help mentor the new coming club in Erwin. She thanked Lion Ed Gibbons for helping to get the Erwin Club started.

President Shipley, Lion Ken Gough and Lion Ed Gibbon are working on a presentation for the new incoming club in Erwin, hopefully in March. The date is to be determined.

Lion Ed Gibbon stated that members should be on the lookout for organizations in need of funds and report to the club for possible assistance.

Lion Ed mentioned that the Vision Van will be in Johnson City on May 22nd for eye screening.

The president announced that Board meeting will be on next week Thursday February 11th.

Johnson City Lion Club Board Meeting Minutes January 28, 2021

The Johnson City Lions Club met for its Board meeting on Thursday January 28, 2021 at 12 noon at the Johnson City Country Club.  Present at the meeting were Lion Debbie Shipley (President), Lion Ken Gough, Lion George Winton, Lion Ed Gibbons, Lion Steve Campbell and Lion Doris Kaifa (Secretary).

The meeting was called to order by President Debbie Shipley.

Committee and Project Report:

The President asked for committee and project reports. Lion Ken Gough (Treasurer) presented the budget report. The budget was voted upon and accepted by the Board.

The club voted four (4) to one (1) to accept lion Mark Fox’s resignation.

Lion Steve Campbell suggested to the board that the club continue the ETSU scholarship fund. The board agreed for club members to voluntarily make donations to the fund.

Lion Steve updated the club on the sales from the Turtle Derby and membership dues. He reported that everyone was up to date on their dues and are in good standing.

$500 contribution to Volunteer Blind Industries was approved by the board.

Lion Ken reported that he is still collecting eye glasses.

Johnson City Lion Club Regular Meeting Minutes January 21, 2021

The Johnson City Lion Club met for its regular meeting on Thursday January 21st, 2021 at 12 noon at the Johnson City Country Club.  Present at the meeting were Lion Debbie Shipley (President), Lion Ed Gibbons and guest Chaitra, Lion Jerry Lonon, Lion George Winton and Lion Doris Kaifa (Secretary).

The meeting was called to order by President Debbie Shipley.  Lion Ed Gibbons led the opening prayer. Prayer was offered for sick members Lion Judy Vanlandingham, Lion Don Raines, Lion Ken Gough, Lion Dennis Powell and all members.

Lion George Winton won the drawing. He donated the money to the Turtle Derby.

President Debbie read a Christmas card from Lion Judy. She thanked everyone for their prayers.

President Debbie thanked Lion Ed for helping to get the Erwin Club started. She thanked Lion George for setting up the Salvation Army Bell Ringing during the holiday. She also thanked Lion Doris for all her work as secretary.

The club assisted the ETSU CLUB with their dues.

President Debbie suggested that we have a 12 noon and an evening meeting to give everyone chance to attend the meetings.
