Minutes of Sept 15 meeting

Johnson City Lions Club regular noon meeting notes.  (LCI No. 5093)
Date: Thursday, 9/15/2011
Meeting Place: THE JOHNSON CITY COUNTRY CLUB

(12 members present – 0 guests)

The meeting was called to order at 12:24 PM by president, King Lion Steve Campbell, who called on Lion Clem Wilkes to lead the pledge and Ed Gibbons to ask the blessing.

King Lion Steve asked Lions Powell, Raines, Jerry Lonon, Willis, Winton, Gouge, Easlic and Merriss to step forward. One of the Lions was heard to murmur, “We didn’t mean to do it, just trying to have some fun” as they came forward. Turned out that the King Lion just wanted to award these fine Lions their perfect attendance pens for 2010-2011.

Only four weeks left to sell turtles. So far we don’t have an official count but we do know at least 8 sales have been made; one excited Lion sent an email that said he had made 8 sales and he “was on fire”.  It’s time that we all “catch fire” and not only sell sponsorships but report them. Beginning next Wednesday evening please report your accumulative total sponsorship sales to your team captains for the next four Wednesdays so they can report those totals. That way we can get an accurate count and know what we have to do to get to 600. Here are the teams:

Captain Shipley – Fox, Gibbons, Gochenouer, Anderson

Captain Merritt – Easlic, J. Lonon, Winton, Brown, Wilkes

Captain Powell – Winn, McClanahan, J. Vandreumel,

Captain Gough –  Willis, Cox, Raines, A Vandreumel,

Captain Merriss –  Messimer, Campbell, Pike,  Shepherd

Pecans.  Speaking of pecans, Lion Willis said we will have plenty of pecans and if we just sell what we ordered we’ll raise $2700.00 or more. He further stated that it’s OK to sell the new nuts even before you sold the old nuts.

Our current Program Chairman, Lion Willis, introduced Alan Bridwell who works for the Planning Board and is the creator and web master for one of Johnson City’s top secret  treasurers, www.johnsonsdepot.com. Alan proceeded to give everyone present a fascinating history of our fair city from its earliest beginnings back at the end of the 18th century till today complete with hundreds (well a lot anyway) of pictures, drawings and statistics which Mr. Bridwell brought to life. There were even some pictures of the ET&WNC Railroad which we learned stood for Eat Tatters and Wear No Clothes.   An awesome program!

Don’t miss our next program and bring a guest or two; Lion Willis is sure to have something special in store.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:01 PM.

Our next regular meeting will be in three weeks: Thursday, October 6

at which time we will only have a week left to sell turtle sponsorships so, as King Lion Campbell said…

SELL TURTLES! SELL TURTLES! SELL TURTLES!

6. Committee Reports:

Public Relations: No report

Website: The web site is www.johnsoncity.tnlions.org but to get to it you’ll need to type http://johnsoncity.tnlions.org/about/ to land on the landing (home) page; it may seem obvious but it’s not good not landing on the landing page. Say cats and kittens, why not save that address as a favorite and also on your desktop?  All regular club and board meeting notes and minutes will be published there along with a lot of other cool things like Lions pics, upcoming events and maybe even some peachy recipes.

Eyeglasses recycling:  King Lion Gough announced that 3,853 pairs of eyeglasses were taken to the Roanoke recycling center on April 2.  Please plan on attending the next work/fun day in October or November; 200 pairs of eyeglasses are already bagged and ready to go.. It wouldn’t be right for just one or two Lions hogging all the good times and they, the RRC, really do need all the help they can get. Also as a bonus you may learn something; for example on this past trip King Lion Gouge learned an awful lot of about American History, politics of the first half of the twentieth century and more than he cared to know about George Vanderbilt II.

LVBI: All the metal material for the new construction has been delivered and the new call center will go up soon. That means more local employment for sigh impaired tri-cities citizens. Lions Raines and Gough plan on posting pictures on the new JCLC Web site as work progresses.

Membership and Retention:  No report.

Programs: Lions Lynda Gochenouer and Sparkle will be co-program chairs in May and June.

Sight Conservation:  No report

Budget and Finance:  Lion Debbie Shipley said that all committee chairs need request any increases in their budgets by the end of April for them to be considered for the 2011-2012 budget.

Pecans:  No report.

Turtle Derby:  Lion Dr. George Winton reported 20 additional turtles have been purchased as reinforcements and possible future replacements but quickly added that no turtles were lost from last year’s event. These new turtles are just a little insurance. Lion Dr. Campbell said he has deposited more than $20,000.00 so far for last year’s sponsorships and will soon have a full finical report. Also, he is trying to get a Friday in mid October for this year’s TD.

Zone Meeting:  King Lion Gough announced that five JCLC members attended the March 13th Zone meeting in Elizabethton.

Lions Signs:  King Lion Gouge said Lion Sterling Winn reported that new signs will begin going up at the Lions Park next week.

Membership and Retention: No report

New Member Training:  Chair Lion Jerry Lonon said he’s still working on an instruction packet for new members but due to a small flood at his POB progress has been held up but as soon as he dries out (the warehouse not Lion Lonon) he’ll have everything done and ready by June when our next title wave of new members are expected to hit us.

Health and Welfare:  No report.

Newcomers Outreach:  Brochures and free lunch cards are available in abundance. See the secretary if you need some. Keep a few brochures in your car and/or brief case and a few free lunch cards in your purse or wallet; be sure to print your name and phone number on the bottom of each card so that you don’t fumble around handing them out (what if you and your prospect both do not have a pen or pencil?). The new residents list is in and soon Lions will be able to call or call on (their choice) their new neighbors so they can drop off a brochure and/or free lunch card.

Nuts and Bolts Committee:  No report.

Conventions:  No report

Vision Screening:  No report.

Little League:  No report.

  1. 7.      Old Business:  Lion Campbell moved that Lion Worth Peak’s registration request effected January 1st’ 2011 be approved. The motion was seconded by Lion Rains and approved unanimously.

All Lions business having been completed and all the food having been eaten, King Lion Gough decided to adjourn the meeting at precisely 1: 03 PM.

Minutes of the April 7 meeting

Johnson City Lions Club regular noon meeting notes.  (LCI No. 5093)
Date: Thursday, 4/7/2011
Meeting Place: THE JOHNSON CITY COUNTRY CLUB

(18 members present – 1 guest)

The meeting was called to order at 12:21 p.m. by President and King Lion, Ken Gough.

The pledge was led by Clem Wilkes and the invocation prayer was said by PDG Lion Dennis Powell.

Lion Tamer, Lion Sterling Winn introduce Dr. Chris Gregg a professor at ETSU as our guest and announced that Lion Dr. Winton was the undisputed the winner of the drawing (although it was close) and he donated all his winnings to the Turtle Derby.

King Lion Gough introduced the Lion Secretary to report on the Semi-Annual Eyeglasses Recycling trip Saturday, April 2. Only two Lions from Johnson City attended and a total of 11 from District 12-N. Not enough for the work that needs to be done – more hands are needed so please plan on attending in the fall.

King Lion Gough assigned seven Lions to write articles for various pages on the Johnson City, TN. Webb site.

A very special honor was paid to PDG Dennis Powell – a silver chevron commemorating his 55 years as a Lion; guess they allowed toddlers to join back then. Congratulations Lion Dennis and don’t pay any attention to all the snarky remarks about your age, you’re about as young as you think you are which in your case is very young. Thanks for setting a great example for what a great Lion should be for the rest of us.

PDG Dennis Powell receives his 55-year chevron from King Lion Ken Gough

Our speaker today was Wanda Hall who program chairperson Lion Debbie Merritt introduced as about the best and most informed specialist in the reverse mortgage loan business in the Tri-cities area. Ms. Hall is a Senior Loan Officer with Primary Residential Mortgage, Inc. in Kingsport and it didn’t take long for everyone to realize Lion Debbie was right. This lady knows what she’s doing. If you would like to contact her the office number is 423-246-0222 and her mobile phone is 423-534-9979. Thanks Wanda for an excellent presentation.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:59 PM – with minimal injuries.

Our next regular meeting will be two weeks from today Thursday April 21st

Meanwhile there’s a Board Meeting next Thursday, April 14, same time – same place.

Lion Jerry Jones we miss the dickens out of you – come back soon.

Tennessee Lions “volunteer” at Recyling Center

JC Lions Ken Gough and John Merriss joined other East Tennessee Lions on the semi-annual work day at the Roanoke Eyeglass Recyling Center on Saturday, April 2.

Lions John and Ken with recycled eyeglasses that will soon be on their way to medical missions around the world.

It was smaller-than-usual contingent due to a number of work and family commitments, but we worked hard and accomplished a lot.

1st step - sort donated glasses. Unusable glasses are recycled for the metals, and pay for the center's operation.

The work isn’t glamorous, but it’s vital if the Lions are to meet our commitment to provide free eyeglasses to poor people around the world.

We brought 3,850 pairs of glasses with us, plus 2 boxes full from the Elizabethton Lions, for a grand total of well over 4,000 pairs.

You can help by donating your old glasses, in any condition, at any of our recycling locations.  All eye care professionals in Johnson City and Washington County accept used glasses, and there are large collection boxes in front of the Johnson City Wal-Marts.

After glasses are sorted and cleaned, their prescriptions are read and recorded. Then it's off to packing.
