January 19th, 2012 Meeting Notes

Johnson City
Lions Club regular noon meeting notes.  (LCI No. 5093)

Date: Thursday, 1/19/2012

Meeting Place: THE JOHNSON CITY COUNTRY CLUB

(14 members present – 2 guests)

The meeting was  called to order at 12:20 PM by acting president, Lion John Merriss, who called  on PDG Lion Dennis Powell to ask the blessing and Lion Debbie Merritt to lead the pledge.

Lion C.B. Willis  introduced Lion Debbie Merritt who in return introduced her guest Mr.  Tim Peer, IGA store manager, South Roan St.  He was instrumental in our Christmas food donation drive and plans to become a new  member.

Lion John Merriss  introduced our next guest Ms. Jan Paviglio, wife of our newest member, Lion Jim  Paviglio.

Lion Ken Gough handled Jim’s induction ceremony flawlessly (well, almost).

Lion Debbie  Shipley announced the sweetheart dinner will be held at the Johnson City Country Club on Tuesday February 14, 2012. Lion John Merriss will send out a RSVP asking each Lion who will be attending how many guests he or she will
bring. Please, all JC Lions come out and join us because it will take the place of the regularly scheduled meeting and will be both romantic and fun; guaranteed.

Lion John Merriss stated we received a thank you letter from District 12N Charities in regard to White Cane Days.

Then what everyone was on the edge of their seats for: the presentation by Lion Merriss and “yours truly” about the Lion’s Learning Retreat that took place this past
weekend January 13-15 in Manchester, Tennessee. We attended 6 of 11 seminars and received great ideas on membership, enthusiasm, and a look at the big picture of Lionism.  It was announced that Remote Area Medical (RAM) has donated a Vision Van that is currently being upgraded. This van will be able to serve up to two hundred and fifty people a day for vision screening and manufacturing of eyewear (same day service).

Lion Winton had a good idea regarding membership; the people at work with whom  you share the greatest camaraderie will make the ideal candidates.

Lion Ken Gough announced he needs dates for late March and/or early April for the spring trip to Roanoke, VA for eyeglass recycling. Please let him know what date fits your schedule we need as many volunteers as possible.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:55 PM.

Our next regular meeting will be in two weeks: Thursday, February 2, 2012.

Lions & IGA Donate to God’s Corner

The Johnson City Lions and IGA on South Roan partnered to provide God’s Corner with food for the less fortunate during the Christmas season.  The Lions’ purchase was generously suplemented by IGA. Pictured (from left to right) are Lion Debbie Merrit, God’s Corner volunteer Donna Dik, IGA Store Manager Tim Peer, JC Lions President Steve Campbell, and Lion Ed Gibbons.

Our sincere thanks to IGA for their donation.  Working together makes an even greater difference!

We serve!

December 15th, 2011 Regular Meeting

Johnson City Lions Club regular noon meeting notes. (LCI No. 5093)
Date: Thursday, 12/15/2011
Meeting Place: THE JOHNSON CITY COUNTRY CLUB

(16 members present – no guest)

The meeting was called to order at 12:28 PM by President Steve Campbell, who called on Lion Debbie Merritt to lead the pledge and PDG Lion Dennis Powell to ask for the blessing.

Lion CB Willis won the drawing and the money was donated to the Turtle Derby.

Lion Debbie Shipley announced that she has reserved our regular meeting room for Wednesday, February 14th for a St. Valentine Day’s Dinner at 6:30 PM. No one was surprised when Lion Clem Wilkes asked if that would take the place of a regular meeting. Surprisingly, the answer was, “Yes, indeed it will be”. At that point Lion Ken Gough moved that the dinner replace the regularly scheduled meeting on the 16th and that motion was seconded by Lion Don Raines and passed with only one dissenting vote. A RSVP request will be made soon to all Johnson City Lions asking if they will be attending alone or with a guest (their sweetheart) so that Lion Shipley will know how much food to order.

Lion Merritt asked if Christmas Benevolence money that was not used to support other charities could be given to help the God’s Corner Ministry to help the homeless and people with limited means to provide badly needed coats and other clothes for their families. Immediate Past President Ken Gough pointed out that this was up to Lion Dr. George Winton who is the chair of that committee. Lion George said he would see to it that the God’s Corner Ministry will receive $250.00 immediately.

Today’s speaker, Gloria Wilson was introduced by program chair, Lion Paul Easlic.  In addition to being a Lion and the mother of a child who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age eleven, Gloria works for the American Diabetes Association. Her presentation entitled “Stop Diabetes” was more than a speech; it was a heart-felt plea for continuing the fight to control and reduce the effects of diabetes, and eventually end it.

The meeting was called at 12:53 PM.

The next regular meeting will be held on January 19th, 2012.

Ties for the Blind Foundation trip to Alaska

One Big Bear

On September 20, 2011, members of the Johnson City Ties for the Blind Foundation traveled to Anchorage, Alaska to attend the USA -Canada Lions Leadership Forum.  The Ties for the Blind Foundation is a subsidiary service organization of the Johnson City Lions Club composed of volunteer past presidents of the Johnson City Lions Club.  The Foundation raises money for service projects in Washington County, Tennessee, primarily by selling Lions Club embroidered clothing and other paraphernalia at Lions conventions.

The USA –Canada Lions Leadership Forum is an annual convention used to train recently elected Lions club officers for their new positions in their home clubs.  The Forum is usually attended by a few thousand Lions, so it provides a great opportunity to sell Lions memorabilia and clothing.

Look carefully near the center of the picture – you don’t see one of these wandering around town very often.

The TFTB guys sold over $20,000 in clothing and other items in a 2-1/2 day period.  Profits from the sale will be returned to Johnson City and donated to various charitable organizations.  Although working long hours at the store was challenging, the volunteers managed to take a few hours off each evening to sample Alaska’s culinary delights including salmon, halibut and reindeer sausage.

On Saturday evening September 24, the tired Lions returned home on the red eye express, arriving in Johnson City early the next afternoon.

6. Committee Reports:

Public Relations: No report

Website: The web site is www.johnsoncity.tnlions.org but to get to it you’ll need to typehttp://johnsoncity.tnlions.org/news/. Lion Ken Gough reported that every Club activity now has a page and that all important announcements and meeting notes will be posted on the Club site.

Eyeglasses recycling: No report.

Membership and Retention: No report.

Programs: No report.

Sight Conservation: No report.

Budget and Finance: No report.

Turtle Derby: No report.

Zone Meeting: No report.

Lions Signs: No report.

Membership: In spite of the fact that he’s a friend of the Secretary, Lion Eddie Gibbons moved to accept Jim Paveglio’s application. The motion was seconded by Lion Ken Gough and passed unanimously. BTW, Jim’s name is easy to pronounce if you just remember that the “g” is silent.

New Member Training: No report.

Health and Welfare: No report.

Nuts and Bolts: No report.

Conventions and Training:

  • The Tennessee Lions Learning retreat will be held January 13-15, 2012. Any Lion wishing to attend this event in Manchester, TN, call the Secretary right away. Applications must be mailed no later than Monday 12/12/11 so don’t dilly, dally or dilly-dally.
  • The District 12N Convention will be held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in downtown Knoxville, February 17-18, 2012. Those could easily be the coldest days of the year but of course the theme will be Hawaiian. You just might want to bring some long-johns to wear under those floral shirts and hula skirts; red for the boys and plaid for the girls.

Kid’s Sight Vision Screenings: Lions CB Wills and PDG Dennis Powell have been working diligently conducting site screenings and training Lions to use the new camera. Forty four kids, ages four to six, have been checked already with two potential problems uncovered. Another screening will be conducted Wednesday 12-15-2011 at the ETSU Child Study Center on Greenwood Dr. It was decided to do whatever we need to do to raise $5,000.00 to purchase our own camera to conduct future tests. That way, once everybody has been trained to do the screenings and we’ve covered the kids in Washington county we can train the other clubs in our zone to serve their communities. If they can’t or do not choose to buy a camera we can loan them ours so those kids don’t miss out. Everyone agreed this is just about the best thing we can do for the children in our community. Lions Debbie Merritt and Debbie Shipley agreed to meet with Lion Dr. Janet Brown to see if they can find and talk to some eye clinics and/or eye health service agencies and professiionals that might partner with us to grow this totally awesome program.

Little League: No report.

Pecans: Lion CB Willis said everybody’s doing a great job and said will reach our goal. He asked that you give or send him a check made out to the Johnson City Lion’s Club for the pecans you have ($256.00/case) and not pay for them as you sell them. Sell the pecans for $8.00 per 12 ounce bag or any price you want as long as you pay $8.00 per bag or $256.00 per case.

LCIF: No report.

7. Old Business:

  • Lion Don Raines reported a large turnout of 250 to 300 people for the open house at the LVBI call center last week. Congressman Roe, some state senators, Lion Don and many other dignitaries were in attendance.
  • Lion Dr. Winton reminded everyone about the bell wringing schedule for next week; we’ll be wringing those bells from 4PM to 8PM on Wednesday the 14th and from 1PM to 8PM on Thursday the 15th come sleet or shinola.

8. New Business: Because the Country Club will be closed for the first two weeks in January Lion Ken Gough made a motion to cancel the first regular club meeting and the January Board meeting, and only have one regular meeting in January on the third Thursday. The motion was seconded by Lion Paul Easlic and passed unanimously.

King Lion Campbell mercifully adjourned the meeting at 12:56:36 PM.

NEXT REGULAR MEETING: Thursday, December 15th , 2011 (our last of the year and it’s going to be a lu-lu; don’t you even think about missing it!!!!).

Meeting of Nov. 17, 2011

Johnson City Lions Club regular noon meeting notes. (LCI No. 5093)

Date: Thursday, 11/17/2011

Meeting Place: THE JOHNSON CITY COUNTRY CLUB

(16 members present – 1 guest)

The meeting was called to order at 12:29 PM by president, King Lion Steve Campbell, who called on Lion Jerry Lonon to lead the pledge and PDG Lion Dennis Powell to ask for the blessing.

Chad Hagy was introduced as a guest and prospective member. This was Chad’s first visit and (in spite of what he saw today) said he plans to come back.

Lion Sterling Winn won the drawing and donated the money to the Tail Twister’s fund.

Lion Ken Gough asked about the bell ringing schedule because he said he noticed that bell ringing had already begun else ware and he’s itching to get started. Lion Dr. Winton said he would get the schedule together ASAP.

Lion Ed Gibbons auctioned off the tickets for the “Autisim Speaks” dinner being held this Saturday evening at the Doubletree Hotel for children who suffer from Autisim.

Lion Sterling Winn auctioned off a Lowes gift card and got $5.00 for it which was added to the Tail Twisters’ fund.

Lion Clem Wilkes said it’s easy to sell pecans if you send everybody on your email list a notice that the pecans are in and what the proceeds are used for.

The Country Club may be closed the first two Thursdays in January. It was decided that if that happens one of the regularly scheduled meetings that month will be dropped.

Nothing was said about selling new turtle sponsorships for next year’s Derby.

Speaking of the TD, the best time to sell a sponsorship is right after you sold one while you enthusiasm is high. The second best time is when you’ve gone for a month or longer without selling even one. The worst time is to wait until a couple of weeks before the derby.

Program Chair Lion Paul Easlic introduced today’s speaker, Sue Orr, Executive Director of the Johnson City Senior Center. There’s a lot going on this fiftieth year at the SC and Sue had the pictures to prove it. She also gave each Lion a copy of Senior Lifestyles – a monthly newspaper designed to let seniors know what’s happening at the center.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:59 PM.

Our next regular meeting will be in two weeks: Thursday, December 1st.

Minutes of the Nov. 3 meeting

Johnson City Lions Club regular noon meeting notes.  (LCI No. 5093)
Date: Thursday, 11/3/2011
Meeting Place: THE JOHNSON CITY COUNTRY CLUB

(16  members present – 1 guest)

The meeting was called to order at 12:30 PM by president, King Lion Steve Campbell, who called on Lion Debbie Shipley  to lead the pledge and  PDG Lion Dennis Powell to ask for the blessing.

Jim Pavelglio  was introduced as a guest and prospective member. This is Jim’s second visit. If he dares to come back one more time he’s getting an application.

Lion Ken Gough said the 100 Loblolly trees we agreed to plant are not really that good for the intended purpose of beautifying and emphasizing the ommunity and suggested that we can get much better saplings for 57 cents each. Knowing a good investment when he sees it, Lion Wilkes said to put him down for one. All in attendance seemed to agree with Lions Gough and Wilkes and the matter will be considered at the Board of Directors meeting or the second regular meeting of November.

Lion Ed Gibbons received a builder key and a membership advancement key for his work bringing in two new members last year. Good job Ed.

Lion Gough reported that the Johnson City Club collected a record 3300 pairs of glasses and transported them  to the Roanoke Recycling Center last Saturday along with a large number from the Kingsport Club. Between 20,000 and 25,000 were sorted that day.  Also, about 4,000 were brought back to Johnson City; all had been cleaned, read, sorted and boxed and given to Jim Baxter for a Mission Trip to Peru.

Lion Tamer Lion CB Willis said the pecans will be in either tomorrow or next week and he’ll notify everyone when they get here. He asked that all Lions come to Lion Lonon’s  warehouse to pick up their nuts. One or two pecans are light but a case of them is real heavy.

Several Lions appeared to be thinking, “Lets all jump out the window” when the Secretary once again asked that every Lion sell new  turtle sponsorships all year starting now for next year’s Derby. He said 200 new (about 8 per active Lion) sponsorships along with the 475 sold for this year’s Derby would give us 675 (more or less) and, (yes) Virginia, not only is there a Santa Clause, we will raise $30,000.00 next year’s for the 60th anniversary of the Turtle Derby.

Speaking of the TD, the Secretary passed around a Turtle “Thank-You” card that he sent to everyone who bought a sponsorship from him and offered to send the same card to any Lion’s customers for his cost of $1.40 per card which includes first class postage.  Each card will be addressed to sponsors using their first name and will be signed by the Lion who sold the sponsorship, not the Secretary, and will have the seller’s return address on the envelope.  If you would like to avail yourself of this service just shoot the Secretary a request by e-mail and he’ll send them out right away and send you a bill.

Lion Paul Easlic introduced our speaker, Zoey Duck and her assistant Betsy Bailey. Zoey and Betsy are ETSU students and members of Alpha Xi Delta and are promoting their sorority’s support of the “Autism Speaks” campaign to help children who are victims of this challenging birth defect we’ve all heard about; some have experienced this challenge through friends or family.  Alpha Xi Delta is hosting a Xiti Dinner on November 19, 2011 at  6:30 PM at the Double Tree Hotel.  Tickets are $30.00 and can be purchased from Sarah Jeffery. Contact Sarah at Jeffery@goldmail.etsu.edu.

PDG Dennis Powell moved that our Club purchase 4 tickets so that we can have a drawing or an auction at the next regular meeting.  The motion was seconded by Lion Easlic and passed unanimously.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:53  PM.

Our next regular meeting will be in two weeks: Thursday, Novemger 17st.

The BOD meeting will be held next Thursday (STSP) and all Lions are invited.

East Tennessee Lions Recycle Glasses In Roanoke

Brief report of the 10/29/2011 Recycling trip:

Lion Ken Gough and I enjoyed the sunrise as we drove up to the Recycling Center in Roanoke, along with 3300 pairs of glasses from our Johnson City Club and quite a few from the Kingsport Club.  With a lot of rain but no snow we got there around 9 AM and began working immediately; Ken cutting and making boxes and me, along with six other Lions, separating and preparing glasses for measuring and packaging for world wide distribution. Before the day was out we we’re able to prepare well over 20,000 pairs, probably closer to 25,000.

It was encouraging to work with our current District Governor and his wife and more PDG’s than you could shake a pair of bifocals at, with all of us literally getting our hands dirty.  Everybody worked hard and everybody had fun and we all felt a sense of doing some good, even if we did miss a few football games or some goings-on we may have otherwise been engaged in that day. Personally, there was nothing better I could have done Saturday.

As a bonus we brought back five large boxes of glasses (approximately 4,000 pairs) ready for immediate use and handed them off to Jim Barker, a Missionary with the Johnson City Alliance Church. Jim is planning a Mission Trip to Peru, South America in the next few weeks.  He was delighted to get them and  assured us they would all be put to good use before the year is over.

All in all, a good day’s work.

John Merriss

Minutes of the Oct. 6, 2011meeting

Johnson City Lions Club regular noon meeting notes.  (LCI No. 5093)
Date: Thursday, 10/6/2011
Meeting Place: THE
JOHNSON CITY COUNTRY CLUB

 (13 members present – 0 guests)

The meeting was called to order at 12:22 PM by president, King Lion Steve Campbell, who called on Lion Gayle Cox to lead the pledge and Lion Dennis Powell to ask for the blessing.

Lion Gough reported that we will take 3000 pairs of eye glasses on the RRT (Roanoke Recycling Trip) October 29th. If you want to go, call Ken (928-8134 w or 542-3835 h).

Only one week and one day left to sell turtles. The good news is we have about 387 sponsorship sales as of today.  The bad news is we’re 143 short of last year and 243 sort of our goal of 600. Please contact and sell today and tomorrow and send all your sales to King Lion Steve Campbell (srcampbell@northeaststate.edu) tomorrow so he can get them in the official printed program that will be distributed at the Derby. Then keep on getting sales right up to TD day (October 14th); sales that come in after tomorrow will be printed on an insert page that will be inserted into each program.

If all active Lions will sell 9 more turtles we’ll “get ‘er done” so let’s “just do it”.

Our current Program Chairman, Lion CB Willis, introduced Trevor Southerland, Director of Rehabilitation Services at LVBI as our speaker.  Trevor explained the basic plan for the new call center, answered questions and, after the meeting concluded, led us on a tour of the new facility where we saw Lions Lynda Gochenouer and Sparkle and several new employees, trainees and trainers. If you were not able to take the tour plan on getting over there; you’ll be impressed – it’s a state of the art call center and it’s awesome.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:54 PM.

Our next regular meeting will be in two weeks: Thursday, October 20.

Next Board meeting is next week, Thursday, October 13, the day before the Turtle Derby.

Speaking of the Turtle Derby, keep… sellin’… turtles.
