Meeting Minutes May 1, 2014

(11 members present and 4 guests)

The meeting was called to order at 12:25 PM by King George Winton. Lion Jerry Lonon led the pledge and 1st VDG Ed Gibbons asked for the blessing.

Back-up Lion Tamer CB said the Lion Secretary won the drawing and he (the sec) gave the money to the Turtle Derby.

Acting Lion Tail Twister Winn twisted some tails and collected some money.

VDG Lion Gibbons introduced his two new guests Linda Baughman and Sam Crowder for the second meeting in a row! Here we grow again!!!!!

Then, VDG almost awarded IPP Brandon Johnson from the ETSU campus club for his participation in the Lions Mentoring Program at the state convention in Memphis (Brandon will get his pin as soon as Ed finds it). Lion Johnson also received a handsome plaque that he actually did received from the district for District Lion of the Year from DVG Gibbons. In addition, Lion Ed gave Lion Brandon shirts, ties and scarves for deserving Campus Club members from the Ties for the Blind foundation.

Tessa Branhan, a friend of Lion Johnson and the Campus Club addressed our club about her plans to form a Leo Club for the Tri Cities Area right here in Johnson City. Here we grow again!!!!! Tessa, who will be a high school senior this fall, said she has up to 15 prospective members and will have the 20 she needs to form a new club by this coming September and asked for $250.00 a year from our club to support this effort. This should be a great investment because Leos are between 12 and 18 years of age and will feed the campus club which, in turn, will feed our club and other clubs across the state of country assuring dedicated Lions for the future.

Our other speaker today, Lion Brandon Johnson said, in addition to helping with the new Leo Club formation, he got the Campus Club to 33 members in his term as its first president and he expects it to continue to grow. Retention is at 100% with about 50% attending meetings and participating in monthly community projects.

George Winton, Lynda Gochenouer and John Merriss, three members of the new (and many say the worst ever) board of directors were sworn in by STB DG Gibbons.

Lion Ken Gough was assigned the honor of being the program chair for May and June. Lion Winn volunteered to take July and August and Lion Willis agreed to next March and April. That leaves 3 “volunteers” needed for the other months and those slots will be assigned to Lions who were not in attendance today who don’t attend the next regular meeting. You know who you are.

Meeting adjourned at 1:04 PM

Humbly submitted,

John Merriss

Silent Auction for Chrome-Cobalt Ring

The current high bid is:  No bids yet.

Bidding closes: June 1.

The Johnson City Club is auctioning a chrome-cobalt ring with a suggested new retail price greater than $400.  It was donated to the club in a used eyeglass collection box. Although chrome-cobalt is not a precious metal, it is very popular for its wear and corrosion
resistance, non-allergenic properties, and silver-blue color

Ring 3

The ring is in good but not new condition.  It is a Size 8, and we’re told it can’t be resized.

All proceeds of the auction will be donated to the Used Eyeglass Collection Program and used to cover program expenses.

The rules of the auction:

  • Bidding starts at $100, with a minimum increment of $5.
    • Submit your bids to kdg@accmachprod.com
    • The current high bid will be posted above and will be updated as soon as possible after a new bid is received.
    • Bidding will cease on June 1, 2014.  However, if a new bid is received on June 1, it will be posted as soon as possible, and bidding will be extended for 24 hours after posting.  From that point on, bidding will be extended for 24 hours after the posting of each bid until no further bids are received for at least 24 hours.
    • The winner will be informed by email as soon as possible.
    • The ring will be shipped upon receipt of the winner’s check.  Johnson City pays freight.
    • The winner will have 1 week after shipment to inspect the ring and either accept or reject it.  If rejected, inform us at kdg@accmachprod.com and return the ring, at which time the check will be destroyed or returned as directed.  If not informed within 1 week, the sale is final.
    • If the winner rejects the ring, the Johnson City club reserves the right to cancel the auction or offer the ring to the next-highest bidder.

For additional information, please email us.

Good luck!

Minutes of April 17, 2014 Meeting

Regular meeting of the Johnson City Lions Club held at noon Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the Johnson City Country Club, Johnson City, TN 37604

(13 members present and 2 guests)

The meeting was called to order at 12:30 PM by King Lion Sterling Winn.  Lion George Winton led the pledge and 1st VDG Ed Gibbons asked the blessing.

King Lion Winn won the drawing and gave the money to the Turtle Derby.

New Lion Theresa Gibbons received her Certificate of membership.  Welcome to the Club Theresa! We need you.  And thanks for agreeing to be our Lion Tamer starting next month.

Lion CB Willis received his 40 year membership chevron. Imagine that – 40 years. Amazing!!!  Congratulations CB and thanks for your leadership and humble service all these years. All Lions look up to you!!!

VDG Ed Gibbons introduced his two guests and prospective new members Linda Bouton and Sam Crowder who are both with Elizabethton Federal Savings Bank.

Club members voted to accept the Board of Directors recommendation to purchase the new “Spot” camera.  The camera we now own will be loaned to other clubs in the District on request.  The purchase of the new camera will deplete our savings so we’ll have to sell more turtle sponsorships this fall. Start working on your game plan – we’ll probably need to sell 500 or more and to do that everyone will need to contribute with a big effort.

Lion Debbie Shipley introduced today’s speaker, Mark Mattson of Holston  Habitat for Humanity, who brought along fellow Board member Johanna Gillespie .  Mark teaches at Milligan College and Johanna is with 1st Tennessee Bank.

After a presentation on the history and activities of Habitat (which are more extensive than the building of houses for which they are so well known) Mark asked us to consider playing a leadership role in building a new home for a blind couple (yes, both husband and wife are blind). The home will be built in Johnson City and will take between 6 abd 8 weeks to finish. If you can help in any capacity call Mark at 423-239-7689 or 423-378-4760, or email him at info@holstonhabitat.org.

Meeting adjourned at 1:06:33.

Humbly submitted,

John Merriss

Don’t forget our next regular meeting where Lion Winton and the new officers will be sworn in(at).  That meeting will be held on the first of May which will be, appropriately, on the first – moving day.

VDG Ed Gibbons said he’s trying to get Sally Lee, the president of Habitat for Humanity in this area, as our speaker for a meeting soon. Johnson City Adds 4 new members!

Four new members were inducted into the Johnson City Lions Club on Thursday, March 20, and a member whose induction was overlooked last year also took part in the ceremony. Amazingly, District Governor-elect Ed Gibbons was the sponsor of every one of the new members – giving the rest of us a lesson in how to make the club grow!

Welcome to new members Tom Terry, Mike Ferguson, Theresa Gibbons and Ed Hensley, and apologies to Lion Jane Myron for the oversight!

Meeting Minutes Mar. 20, 2014

Regular meeting of the Johnson City Lions Club held at noon Thursday, March 20, 2014 at the Johnson City Country Club, Johnson City, TN37604

(13 members present and 2 guests)

The meeting was called to order at 12:24 PM by King Lion Sterling Winn.  Lion Jerry Lonon led the pledge.

District Governor-elect Eddie Gibbons asked the blessing.

Lion Tamer CB Willis said Lion Lonon won the drawing and Lion Jerry donated the money to Lion Park Signs.

Lion Tamer Willis recognized DG-elect Lion Ed Gibbons who introduced his guest Gerry Mathison, who will be our next new member right behind Lion Tom Terry’s guest Bryan Botts, who got his application in just minutes after Mr. Mathison.

King Lion Sterling Winn introduced the Club Secretary who reported on the Zone meeting held on the ETSU campus two days ago and hosted by the new campus club.  The meeting was well attended including 5 members from our Johnson City club (6 including Sparkle) but the Greenville Club won the prize for most attending from another club. Actually ETSU had the most present hands down but being the host they were not eligible for a prize.  6 or 7 new ETSU Lions were inducted putting them at 31 members and King Lion Johnson said he’s shooting for 40 by this time next year and the biggest Lions club in the district before he graduates.  Lion Lee Bryant from the Kingsport club introduced the new Spot camera that her club is trying out. She had been using it that day and found it to be far superior for the following reasons; (1) FASTER – two eyes at once, can be read with an instant print-out that can be given to the parents on the spot, (2) EASIER – just aim an click, (3) QUIETER – there are no beeps, even hard of hearing Lions can be photographers. It’s a bit more expensive ($7,200.00) but we can get a trade in with the camera we’re using now and if more than one club buys one a further discount can be had.

King Lion Winn then introduced Lion Ken Gough who inducted 5 new Lions; Lions Jane Myron, Tom Terry, Mike Ferguson, Theresa Gibbons and our newest Lion Ed Hensley.  Lion Ed Gibbons sponsored 4 of these and deserves our sincerest thanks.  Lion Terry just signed up a new Lion, Bryan Botts, who will be our newest Lion (to be inducted at the next meeting) and has brought in another prospective member. Good work Tom!  Lion Ed Gibbons introduced his guest and soon to be newest member, Gerry Mathison.

Lion King Lion Winn presented a slate of nominees for the 2014 – 2015 fiscal year:

            George Winton – President
            Ken Gough – 1st VP
            Gayle Cox – 2nd VP
            Steve Campbell – 3rd VP
            Secretary – John Merriss
            Lion Tamer – Theresa Gibbons
            Tail Twister – Mike Ferguson
            2 year Director Lynda Gochenouer
            1 year Director Tom Terry

Lion Ken Gough moved to close the nominations and the motioned was seconded by Steve Campbell and passed unanimously.

Once again, Lion Ken Gough announced this spring’s eyeglasses Roanoke recycling trip will be held Saturday April 12.  If you can serve at this important event let Lion Gough know. We need 10 to beat ETSU.  So far, since their formation that club has had the best attendance of any other Club in the District.

Welcome all new members, especially real new members Mike and Ed and soon new members Bryon and Gerry.

Meeting was adjourned at 12:58 PM, right on time.

Next regular meeting, 4/5/2014.

Respectfully submitted 3/20/2014

New Eyeglass Collection Box In Service!

Thanks to Lion Dennis Powell, a newly-refurbished used eyeglass collection box is now in service in Elizabethton.

Elizabethton Collection Box

The box, which was in bad condition after years of neglect, was refurbished by Dennis Powell Body Shop free of charge to the Lions.  It required extensive work, removing many layers of old paint and rust, repainting, and replacing the lock.

The expertly-repaired, like-new box is now in front of the Elizabethton Walmart, accepting donations of used glasses.

Many thanks to Lion Dennis and his employees!

Meeting Minutes March 6, 2014

Regular meeting of the Johnson City Lions Club, Noon Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the Johnson City Country Club, Johnson City, TN 37604

(12 members present and 4 guests)

The meeting was called to order at 12:23 PM by King Lion Sterling Winn.  Lion Steve Campbell led the pledge of allegiance and DG Ed Gibbons asked the blessing.

John Merriss won the drawing and directed the money go to the Turtle Derby.  DG Ed Gibbons introduced his guest and soon-to-be-new  Lion (he just signed up today!), Ed Hensley.

Lion Tom Terry introduced his guest Steve Rebmann.

DG Ed Gibbons thanked the Lions who supported his nomination and election at the District 12N convention two Saturdays ago and said he’s a rarin’ to go. There’s little doubt that he’ll be one of the greatest DGs of all time.

DG Ed Gibbons presented Lion CB Willis with a special award from Lions International President Barry Palmer, the Presidential Certificate of Appreciation, recognizing 40 years of service in Lionism.  CB received a standing ovation at the convention; well deserved. The only thing the nominating committee got wrong was that CB was president twice, not  just once.

DG Gibbons presented to King Lion Winn the coveted Gold Star Award presented to our club for DG Mike’s during his year of rule. The King got so excited that he left the plaque at the Country Club but hopefully it will turn up before he gets back from his, King Sterling’s, spring break vacation.

Lion Steve Campbell assured King Lion Winn that the slate of officers for 2014-2015 will soon be announced.

Lion Ken Gough announced this spring’s eyeglasses Roanoke recycling trip which will be held soon – Saturday April 12He said that lately we have not been showing enough interest by way of attendance and that other clubs like many Knoxville clubs (that must travel much further) are forced to cover our LOA (lack of attendance). Because of his shyness and gentle nature, Lion Ken did not mention that last fall, the newest club in District 12N – the ETSU Campus club – out-attended our club 4 to 2.  Please plan on attending this important event and remember, what we do in Roanoke dose not stay in Roanoke!!!!  It helps people all over the world.

Finally, DG Lion Gibbons introduced Retha Patton, Executive Director of Eastern Eight Community Development which provides affordable housing solutions for the good citizens of eight counties in Northeast Tennessee. This fine non-profit organization is helping hundreds of low and middle income people find or keep their housing in bad times. If you know someone who needs housing of relief  in their payment amounts can contact Retha Patton at , 214 E. Watauga Ave., 423-232-2042 or 423-791-2507 (cell) or rpatton@e8cdc.org . Or visit www.e8cdc.org .

The meeting adjourned at 1:03 PM.

Don’t forget the Zone meeting to be held on March 18th on the ETSU campus Culp Center at 6:30 PM, meal and 7:00 PM, Meeting. $15.00 per person includes meal. Guys, look sharp.

Next Thursday, 3/13 Board Meeting, VP George Winton in charge.
