Minutes of regular meeting, Feb. 5, 2015

Meeting notes from the 1st regular meeting of the Johnson City Lions Club for February held Thursday, February 5, 2015 at the Johnson City Country Club, Johnson City, TN 37601.

(10 members present and 2 guests)

The meeting was called to order at 12:26 PM by King Lion, George Winton.

DG Lion Gibbons lead the prayer Lion Don Raines led the pledge.

King George announced a good turnout for the Zone meeting held Tuesday Feb. 3rd near the ETSU campus. In addition to all the Zone business discussed, our service project that night was to make up 200 Valentines for veterans being served by the Mountain Home VA center in Johnson City. Thanks to Lion Brandon and members of the ETSU club for a well organized and hosted meeting.

District Governor Lion Ed Gibbons asked that every member who is in town attend the District Convention on the 20th and 21st of this month. Thanks to the East TN Eye bank the Friday night dinner at the Carnegie Hotel at 6:30PM is free, as well as the entertainment. DG Lion Ed also said he’s committed to getting started on time on the 21st (9AM) and ending on time (2PM) so anything else you need to do that day can be done while it’s light.

(Editorial note: Being both a DG and a loyal active member of a club, as Lion Ed is, and running a business on top of that is a remarkable and exhausting undertaking and sometimes can be a royal pain in the you know what. By stepping up as Lion Ed has for us, for the district and the state along with his guidance and work for LVBI and the Ties for the Blind Foundation I don’t think it’s too much to ask that everyone at least attend this convention. Let’s make this the best District Meeting ever!!!!)

Our guest speakers today represented Family Promise – Allison Smith, Paul Helphinstine and Bob Hall. Allison is their operation manager, Paul is last year’s Board President and Bob is the new executive director and was today’s speaker. The Johnson City Lions Club first heard about Family Promise/IHN back in 2000 when it was being organized. In 15 years they’ve helped over 800 families stay together. They not only assist families at their greatest moment of need through IHN, they also move them up and out through a program called “Moving Families Home” by mentoring, supporting and educating their “guests”.

Some of Bob’s remarks: “Their self esteem goes up when they come into the Family Promise program. We share Gods love with them. We hold them accountable. We keep the family together. We call them ‘guests’. We all want the best for ‘our families’. Our greatest reward is seeing them graduate from the program ”

We are blessed to have this fine, caring and needed organization in our community.

Meeting adjourned at 1:02 PM

• The convention will be held at the Carnegie Hotel and we’ll be the hosts and hostesses.
• Friday night’s dinner is free and entertainment will be provided.
• There also will be entertainment Friday evening and a very reasonable charge for lunch and dinner Saturday.
• DG Lion Gibbons has worked very hard for this club and for the district this year; at the very least we should support him by attending the convention.

Come on, guys, let’s make this a very successful event!  100% attendance is the goal.  98% will be OK.  97% or below will NOT be OK!!!!!  Applications available in District News and Views, out today at a computer near you.

Our speaker today was Stacy Lawson, co-founder and leader of “The River” a ministry for women in the community who need help. The River operates in downtown Johnson City. Meeting Notes – Nov. 6, 2014 Regular Meeting

Meeting notes from the 1st regular meeting of the Johnson City Lions Club held Thursday, November 6, 2014 at the Johnson City Country Club, Johnson City, TN 37604

(8 members physically present and the rest, hopefully, were out selling turtles.)

The meeting was called to order at 12:26 PM by King Lion, George Winton.

After PDG Dennis Powell gave the prayer and the Secretary the pledge we were off to the races; the turtle races!!!
Nobody won the drawing; all the money goes to the Turtle Derby.

Lion Gough announced that he took 3109, not 3108 or 3110 but 3109 pairs of glasses to the Recycling Center last Saturday in the snow and ice. In addition to himself 4 young ladies from the Campus club and yours truly also made the trip. Lion Ken also said “you really are missing something good if you don’t go”. Lion Buffalo, who was cursing the Caribbean that day, took issue with that statement.

At the 2nd regular meeting this month Lion Ken will have collection boxes with him if you know of any commercial establishment with repeat customers (doctor/dentist offices, beauty/barber shops, etc.) he’ll give you one or more as needed so that you can help collect glasses for this important service project.

Lion Gough also volunteered to be the program chair at the 2nd regular meeting this month and he’ll have someone of great stature give a report on one of the most successful community undertakings of the century – the Tweetsie Trail.

Lion Willis got sick and couldn’t make it but he wants you to know that the pecans will be in Monday or Tuesday.

Well, only 3 hours left to sell turtles! Bring your late sales to the dome tonight and somehow Lion Campbell will get them in the racing program. That Lion Steve is a wonder isn’t he!!!!

Well this is it. It looks as if we’re not going to get to 500 or even 400 sponsorships this time but we’ll still have 10 races and all who come will have a wonderful time, especially us. Needless to say all Lions and their spouses and their grandchildren and their friends are needed tonight at 6:30 PM for the Derby. Four or five Lions are needed for set up at 5:00 PM. Y’all come.

Thanks for a great effort!

Meeting adjourned at 12:52 PM

Allison Thigpen and Lee Eniss with the Commission on Aging (why us?) visited the club to announce a forum on aging being held this Saturday (the 18th) at NE State Campus at 8:30 AM. entitled “Tennessee for a Lifetime”. It’s all about open enrollment for Medicare and Medicare benefits.

Everything is about ready for the Turtle Derby; we have a bike, we have door prizes, we have fired-up/ wired-up turtles and we have publicity. About the only thing we don’t have is enough sponsorships (please read the email sent earlier today), so turn on the gas Lions and finish up the job so we can accomplish our mission this year.

Our speaker today was Lion Ron Riehn from the West Knoxville Club assisted by  Lion Amy Barton, secretary from the same club. Ron, a former commissioner for LCIF played two entertaining DVDs about being open to new ideas and role LCIF plays in supporting us.
