Regular meeting minutes June 18, 2015

Meeting notes from the 2nd regular June meeting of the Johnson City Lions Club held June 18,2015 at the Johnson City Country Club, Johnson City, TN 37601.

(8 members present, 1 guest, 1 speaker)

The meeting was called to order at 12:26 PM by President, Lion Ken Gough.

Lion George Winton led the pledge and Lion Ed Gibbons asked for the blessing.

Lion Tom Terry’s guest was Judy Gooden. Judy works for the Crumley House and was attending as a both a friend of Tom and as part of the management team for the Crumley House

Lion Jerry Lonon announced that Lion Winton, who won the drawing, was unselfishly giving all the loot to the Turtle Derby fundraiser.
King Gough announced the eyeglasses recycling trip to Roanoke will take place on Saturday, October 10th this fall.
Lion DG Ed Gibbons volunteered to be the program chair for August.
Lion Winton is the program chair for July. There’s only two meetings scheduled for July – the board directors’ meeting on the second Thursday and the 2nd regular monthly meeting on the third Thursday. (Read this over a couple of times and you’ll figure it out.)
Speaking of DG Gibbons, he announced that the charter meeting for the brand new Lions Club in Elizabethton will be held at the Carter at Main Restaurant on E. Elk Avenue in, you guessed it, Elizabethton, TN on Saturday, July 9th at 6PM. PDG Bill Watson will be the guest speaker. DG Lion ED said this new club already has 28 members and is growing fast. Your attendance is invited and encouraged to help this club, which we are sponsoring, get off to a big start.
At long last, our newest Lion, Larry Street was officially inducted with DG, our very own DG, Lion Gibbons, presiding. Our idiot secretary forgot to bring Larry’s membership kit but will make sure he (Larry) get’s it ASAP.
New officers will be installed soon. King Lion Gough said he hopes he can get this done before his term expires on May 1, 2016.
Lion Tom Terry introduced today’s speaker, June Barrett, founder of and, along with her daughter Lori Beth Ford, inspiration for the Crumley House. The Crumley House is the only non-profit, privately operated brain injury rehabilitation center in the country.

Ms. Barrett has recently completed funding for an $800,000 wing addition to accommodate 18 more overnight guests then are currently being served at CH. Her new project is to raise funds to help families meet the financial obligations that come with dealing with this challenge. She asked us to partner with her in some way to achieve the Crumbley House’s financial challenges and ours with cooperative fundraising. King Lion Gough and DG Gibbons enthusiastically agreed to consider the opportunities of doing just that.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:58 PM.

Meeting Notes May 21, 2015

Meeting notes from the 2nd regular meeting of the Johnson City Lions Club for May held Thursday, May 21,2015 at the Johnson City Country Club, Johnson City, TN 37601.

(8 members present)

The meeting was called to order at 12:25 PM by President Lion Ken Gough.

Lion Tom Terry led the pledge and Lion CB Willis asked the blessing.

There were no guests and Lion Don Raines won the drawing but didn’t have any claim on the winnings because he wasn’t in attendance at the last regular meeting.

King Gough filled up some remaining vacancies for committee chairs for all but one or two positions which he has to confirm with those who indicated interest before completing that task. A few of the members that were present left the meeting with somewhat sore arms but glad to be considered for their leadership potential.

King Lion re-emphasized the need to build membership this year. 1st VP Steve Campbell will chair the membership committed and New Member Training assisted by DG Lion Gibbons. Speaking of new member prospects, the King pointed out the need for new young blood (not that there’s anything wrong with old blood) it just makes sense that the younger folks will guarantee continued success for this great organization for years to come. He suggested that when you bring a prospect once a month, every month, that you make sure that prospect is younger than you. Young at heart doesn’t count.

Lion Larry Street will be our new Zone Chair this year.

New officer training will be held on June 16th at Shoney’s restaurant starting with dinner at 6PM.

Lion Tom Terry moved that $250.00 being donated for a vision mission trip this summer be transferred from the President’s Discretionary Fund in the Administrative Budget to Miscellaneous in the Projects Budget. 2nd by Don Raines, the motion passed unanimously.

New officers will be installed at the first regular meeting in June. God help us!

Thanks to Lion Terry, June Barrett, founder of the Crumley House, is tentatively scheduled to be our speaker at 2nd regular meeting in June – June 18th. Also at that same meeting Lion Street will, at long last, be installed as our newest member.

Meeting was adjourned at 12:51 PM.

Minutes of regular meeting, May 2, 2015

(8 members present)

The meeting was called to order at 12:26 PM by King Lion George Winton.

Lion Don Raines led the pledge and PDG Lion Dennis Powell asked the blessing.

King Lion Winton read a thank you note from Lion Theresa Gibbons for the prayers and flowers we sent to her during her recent illness.

Since District Governor was unavoidably absent today (attending an organizational meeting of the newly-reconstituted Elizabethton Lions Club), King Lion Winton announced that formal installation of the new officers would be rescheduled.  He then turned the meeting over to new King Lion Ken Gough.

King Lion Gough said this year the emphasis must be on building membership by recruiting younger members. He asked that each Lion bring at least one prospective member each month to a meeting. While older members are very welcome, of course, we need younger blood. He will ask the board to designate the first regular meeting in September as Membership Day.

King Lion Ken also wants to make sure that Lions Linda Gochenouer and Sparkle always have transportation to meetings.

Since the July 2nd meeting is only 2 days before the July 4 holiday, Lion Sterling Winn moved that we cancel the 1st regular meeting in July. That motion was seconded by Lion Winton and passed 6 yes to 2 no.

Lion Merriss has been designated as the June program chairman and Lion Winton for July.

Meeting was adjurned at 12:47 PM.

JOHNSON CITY LIONS CLUB MEETING
OF APRIL 16TH, 2015

Since our Secretary was missing on the last meeting of King Lion George’s reign and thus we did not have a report on what happen, here goes.

The pledge was finally started after Lion Ken Gough was able to swallow his mouth full of food and Lion PDG Dennis Powell did the prayer. King Lion George mention that this was his last meeting as President and you should have heard the thunderous applause. Sorry, Lion George you get no credit for being one of our best Lions Club Presidents.

The next meeting on the 7th of May will be installation of the new officers by our own District Governor Ed Gibbons. A statement was announced when the new officers were mention that this is the worst slate of officers we ever had (a statement started by one of our deceased members, Lion Arch Nickles). One of the last things King Lion George did was present a cap embroider with Johnson City Lions Club to every member present. If you come to the next meeting, he might have some left for you absent members. It’s a great looking cap. The next president has a tough act to follow. A nice golf shirt from Ties for the Blind would be nice, incoming President. 

Lion CB Willis had the program and he brought in Dave Ramsey to talk about and show pictures of Rocky Fork in Erwin. It is beautiful and we look forward to its opening.

– Ed Gibbons
