Minutes from Johnson City Lions Club meeting Feb. 4, 2016

Lions Club meeting of February 4, 2016

We had a great turnout in today’s meeting at the Johnson City Country Club. Even the illustrious Lion Clem Wilkes made his quarterly showing. New Lion Tim Tapp did an excellent job of being the official Greeter of all the LIONS that attended. Even late comer Lion Billy Pike was greeted by Lion Tim.

King Lion President Ken Gough read some Thank you notes from Lion C. B. Willis and Lion Theresa Gibbons for our Club’s concern for them during their difficult times. We had two visitors that are potential members. One was a previous member that moved to Florida and now she is back and is joining. She is B. J. Narian. The other visitor is a previous Lion from another state. His name is Brian Powell and he wants to join our club. These are two great additions to our Club. Welcome! Now would be a good time to think about inviting a prospective member to join our Club. Our next meeting is February 18th.

Lion Dennis Powell mention the One Acre Café and how it has affected the community. He also mentioned we should possibly consider having a Lions Club meeting there in the near future.

Our program today was about Coalition for Kids (C4K). Executive Director Randy Hensley told about the start of it and how it has grown to its new location, which is the Tri-City Christian School on Springbrook Drive. He also brought with him the new volunteer coordinator, Cindy Young. She spoke how they are always in need of volunteers for this faith based organization. If you can, you are welcome to help them out.

We have a board of directors meeting next Thursday, the 11th. If you need to make up a meeting to get your perfect attendance pin (Clem), you are welcome.

Dates to remember: February 19-20 District 12N convention in Oak Ridge. See PDG Ed Gibbons for further details on it.

We Serve,

Meeting notes from the 2nd  regular monthly meeting of the Johnson City Lions Club for JANUARY, 2016 held Thursday, Jan. 21st at the Johnson City Country Club, Johnson City, TN 37601.

(9 members present)

The meeting was called to order at 12:25 PM by our president, Lion Ken Gough.

PDG Lion Dennis Powell won the drawing and donated the money to the Pecan undraiser.

Lion Jerry Lonon led the pledge and our newest Lion, Reverend Tim Tapp asked for the blessing.

King Lion Gough ask that all JC Lions think about two needs coming from LCIF and bring their ideas, along with two or three guests, to the first meeting in February and be ready to discuss them. Here are the actions needed:

  • A monetary contribution from this club to help Christian refugees seeking asylum in Europe from terrorist counties where they and their families are in danger of being killed
  • A onetime (most likely) community project that the JCLC can undertake in 2016 and 2017 to celebrate the 100th year of the Lions Clubs which was founded in Chicago in 1917.
  • PDG Lion Ed Gibbons said he will be attending the 12N district convention in Oak Ridge on Friday, Feb. 19th and  selling TFTB foundation merchandize. Lion Ed would welcome other JCLC members who would like to ride along and help. Contact Ed at gigigib@embarqmail.com or (423) 914- 9993 to sign up.

The current club secretary announced that he is resigning effective January 31st due to his impending marriage on the 30th of this month and his subsequent  move to the Nashville area where he will undoubtedly continue to serve in a Lions Club club there.  Thanks for keeping him (me) around for almost 17 years. I will miss y’all. Keep this good “thing” of ours going.

The final order of business was a happy, most deserved one; the presentation of the Melvin Jones award to Lion Billy Pike. Lion Billy has served this club and the less fortunate not only here in this community, but may other others in these Appalachian mountains for many years. Thanks Billy for all your good work. The money that comes with this award will be used to help even more people.

MEET TIM TAPP- OUR NEWEST MEMBER AND A REMARKABLE STORY

TIM TAP INDUCTION

Ouir newwat member Tim Tapp, sponsored by Dennis Powell and inducted by PDG Ed Gibbons,  was installed today 12-17-2015.  Here is his remarkable story:

When Tim Tapp was a middle school student suffering from pneumonia, it might not have seemed like a time for the parable of the talents to have its beginning in his life. And when Ed Clawson came to visit him, it’s likely the pastor didn’t even know the seeds he was planting. But on that visit over 30 years ago, perhaps in some way Clawson was anointing the young boy with talents Tapp would grow into two more or five more. “(Clawson) talked to me like I was a person”, said Tapp, who these days is the outreach and congregational care pastor at Central Baptist Church in Johnson City. “A lot of people don’t treat 12 or 13 year-old kids that way. he told me how much he missed me, and that he was praying for me. Then he prayed with me. “When I became a pastor, it was instilled in me that the thing I wanted to make sure I did was to be with people through the tough times, and the good times. Another person who perhaps unknowingly shaped his future was his grandmother. It started with a simple picture when Tapp was a boy. “I didn’t even realize it was influencing my life, but it was picture of Jesus carrying a lamb, and the sheep following him,” said Tapp. “It was a picture of the good shepherd. I remember my grandmother explaining to me Jesus and his care for the sheep. I can still see that picture still in my mind.”

Tapp, a 46 year old Erwin native, has been married to Amy for 23 years. They have a 21-year old daughter, Carrie and a 15-year old son, john. Tapp graduated from ETSU in 1992, and first studied for the ministry at Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He finished his degree at Liberty University in 1997. And has gone on to pastor churches in South Carolina, North Carolina and Northeast Tennessee before arriving at Central Baptist. In January 2014, Tapp and Central Baptist found a harmony of the minds. “They were looking for someone to do outreach and congregational care,” said Tapp. “The outreach part was a lot about reaching out to the downtown area. Central Baptist is committed to people in this area. I was asked to apply, and I did.” ”As long as we have breath in our body, we should be doing everything we can to help each other out. Each day when I get up, my goal is the great commandment: to love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul, mind and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. I don’t always get right, but I’ve noticed when I seek the to get the first part right, the second part can fall into place pretty easily. At the end of the day, Tapp said his job isn’t really a job after all. “I just get a great joy in what I do,” he said. “Certainly there are difficult moments and frustrating moments, but it not really work to me. I enjoy it so much.”

Welcome Lion Tim Tapp to the Johnson City Lions Club!

LVBI: Lion Don Raines reported that LVBI needs chairs to replace the broken down ones that are  way past the time to replace. LVBI is asking for $10,000.00 from the clubs in the district. Lion Gibbons moved for the club to take up the challenge and pledge $770.00. Dennis Powell seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. Turtle Derby: Lion Raines has arranged for coverage with Cumulus Broadcasting and the News and Neighbor on the night of the Turtle Derby.

Lion Shipley suggested we try to advertise on the electric billboard on West Market St. with a Public Service Announcement. That billboard is near the Carte Center and can add to interest, attendance and business support. Lion Raines will see if that can be arranged; he knows the owner of that billboard company.

Lion Gough said he will write a letter to the editors of the JC Press and the News and Neighbor to gin up support for the TD.
