(11 members present and 2 guests)

The meeting was called to order at 12:27 PM by King Lion, George Winton.

After the prayer led by DG Lion Ed and the pledge led by Ken Gough who remembered every word, we were underway.

The Secretary won the drawing and gave it all to the Turtle Derby.

Lion CB Willis moved that we order 40 cases of pecans this year or more if more are requested. 12 and 16 ounce bags can be ordered. We will charge $8.00 for the 12 ounce bags for a $2.35 profit and $10.00 for the pound bags for a $2.50 profit. Lion Ken Gough seconded the motion and it carried unanimously.

Don Raines introduced Jeff Derby with the News and Neighbor newspaper and Ken Davis with WCYB who are doing publicity for the Turtle Derby.

Our speaker today was PDG Lion Bill McDonald and his wife Carole from the Campbell Club who did a wonderful presentation on the Leader Dog program and brought two beautiful, well behaved dogs to the meeting, one of which was unable to complete the program due to bad knees, and the other, just a pup, in training.

Meeting adjourned at 1:00 PM

Lion CB Willis said we have two ways we can sell pecans this year – either 12 oz. bag for $9.00 or a 16 oz. bag for $10.00.  Let CB know ASAP if you prefer the bigger bag or the smaller bag. He has to know what the majority prefers. The 16 ounce bag is the better deal.

King Lion  George reported that $35,000.00 worth of merchandise was sold by the Ties for the Blind Foundation at the USA/Canada Leadership Forum in Puerto Rico.

Our speaker today was Dr. Judaun Allison, a former member of this Club, who  reported on a mission trip she and her husband and daughter took in May to Uganda, Africa

Meeting Notes – Sept. 4, 2014

Meeting notes from the 1st  regular meeting for September of the Johnson City Lions Club held Thursday, September 4,2014 at the Johnson City Country Club, Johnson City, TN 37604

(16 members present and 1 guest)

The meeting was called to order at 12:26 PM by King Lion, George Winton.

After the prayer led by DG Lion Ed and the pledge led by Lion Gayle Cox whoever won the drawing donated it to the Turtle Derby.

Speaking of the Turtle Derby, Lion Campbell again announced the new “very firm” Turtle Derby date of November 6, 2014.  That’s on a Thursdayin the MSHA Athletic Center (aka the “The Dome” and, just for the Derby, “The Thunder Dome”) on the ETSU campus.

PDG Lion Dennis Powell moved that we only print the minimum order of posters and the regular order of tickets for this year’s Derby. The motion was seconded by Ken Gough and passed unanimously.

It was decided by executive privilege that there will not be a Board of Director’s meeting next Thursday. King George said for any Lion not going to the USA-Canadian Forum to use that time to sell turtles.

Sponsorship sales doubled in two weeks – we’re up to 66! Only 434 to go!

Our speaker today was PDG Clare Crawford from the North Knoxville Club in District 12N who reported on the Eye Bank and that Mountain States Hospital Group has left the system for the present time. This has resulted in a 33% loss of income earned from fees for transporting eyes and eye tissues, etc.

Meeting adjourned at 12:57 PM

Minutes of the regular meeting, Aug. 21, 2014

Meeting notes from the 2nd  regular meeting for August of the Johnson City Lions Club held Thursday, August 21 ,2014 at the Johnson City Country Club, Johnson City, TN 37604

(11 members present and 1 guest)

The meeting was called to order at 12:25 PM by acting King Lion, 2nd VP Lion Steve Campbell.

After the prayer led by DG Lion Gibbons and the pledge led by Lion Gayle Cox nobody won the drawing because there wasn’t any and so the money rolls over.

Lion Campbell announced a new “firm” Turtle Derby date of November 6, 2014.  That’s on a Thursday in the MSHA Athletic Center (aka the “Dome”) on the ETSU campus.

So far sales are at a turtle pace – 34 at meeting time. That’s miserable coming out of the gate! Come on!! Thanks to Lion Campbell we’ve been given an extra 4 weeks to sell 500 sponsorships but we have to sell 88 more than last year. That means selling all of last year’s ASAP so we have time to generate new sales if we need ‘em and we’re going to need ‘em.

Our speaker today was DG Lion Ed Gibbons paying our club his official visit. Lion Ed outlined his plan for this year in the following way:

  • Membership – Ask one (if you don’t know what this means ask ED or any member in attendance today)
  • Service Inquiry – discovering ways we can help the community and the club using CEP (Club Excellence Process)
  • Start a new service project or fundraiser to help us “serve”.

The LCIF motto for this year is “Strength in the ‘pride’”.  Lion Gibbons said we need to embrace this motto as we face the possibility of  being forced to merge with another district if we don’t increase membership in District 12-N by at least 100 members.

To illustrate how that’s done, Lion Gibbons  introduced his guest, Larry Street, a local contractor, who submitted his application and application fee. It’s obvious that our DG has asked more than one (he’s sponsored 5 of  our last 6 new members).

Lion Jerry Lonon (aka Buff) announced that he will bring a new applicant to our next meeting.

Meeting adjourned at 12:56 PM

3. Projects Treasurer’s report by Lion Ed Gibbons: from 7/10/2014 to 8/14/2014 – Income, $1357.69; expenses, $2886.00; Difference -$1528.31.00. Total Liabilities none; Savings $24,956.84

4.  Membership:  The following Lions have missed 4 or more consecutive regular meetings –  Mark Fox and Jane Myron

5.  Dues:  No members are past due.

6. Committee Reports:

Eyeglass Recycling: Ken Gough asked for member participation in the fall recycling trip October 18, 2014.

Sight Conservation: No report.

KidSight Eye Screenings: Lion Sterling Winn recommended that we be ready to purchase the “Spot” camera in case Lions Willis and Powell work out something with the city to do screenings for the city schools’ kindergarteners. If not, the camera we’re using now will be sufficient without further investment except for maintenance. 6 screenings were scheduled for August; 2 have been completed with 4 remaining.

Turtle Derby:  Steve Campbell reported that ETSU’s Brooks Gym will not be available this year, and that we have been offered the Minidome instead. It might be advisable to find a more-suitable location. Lion Winn moved and Lion Merriss seconded a proposal to allow Steve Campbell find and contract for the venue for this year’s Derby, and, if necessary, to change date. The motion passed unanimously. It was suggested that we use last year’s posters and do our own printing of the race forms to save money.

7. Old Business:  Habitat for Humanity house for blind couple. DG Gibbons reported that a contractor whom he expects to join the club soon has expressed an interest in running the project. However, Lion Gibbons suggested that before committing we need to find out what the project will cost. He reported that, recently, it had unexpectedly cost a Knoxville club more than $8,000.00 in addition to a $25,000.00 grant through LCIF to build a house. Lion Lynda Gochenouer agreed to contact Art Pierce at Habitat for Humanity and the Knoxville club to determine the potential cost to our club, and report at the next regular meeting on Aug. 21.

ETSU Center for the Performing Arts – Pursuant to a motion passed at the last Board meeting, Chairman Gough directed that a sign-up sheet be passed around at the next regular meeting next Thursday for INDIVIDUAL contributions for the building of a Center for the Performing Arts at ETSU. PDG Powell will be asked to speak briefly on why our help is being solicited and why we should help on an individual basis.

8. New Business – Chairman Gough presented a request from Brandon Johnson of the ETSU Lions Club for $2,000 to pay members’ international dues of $25/member/year, and fund the club’s projects. During discussion the Board deemed it was appropriate to cover dues this year in order to support this newly-established club. However, its members should raise the money for its projects with help from our club on a case-by-case basis, and be weaned off our support in the long run. Lion Sterling Winn moved, seconded by Lion Campbell, that the club pay the ETSU club members’ international dues for the current fiscal year up to a maximum of $1,000.00, and consider providing seed money for fundraising projects as requested and justified. The motion was approved unanimously. Also discussed but not acted on was that next year the Johnson City club continue to support the Campus Club by paying ½ of the then annual dues.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 12:57 PM.

Next Regular Meeting: Thursday, August 21, 2014.

Next Board Meeting:  Thursday, September 18, 2014

Sell those turtles!

Fellow Lions, Boy do we have our work cut out for us!  We need 500 turtle (sponsorships) sales and we have to get them in by September 8th!!!!

Last year we had 413 sales and 30 of those were sold by Lions who are no longer in the club.  We do have 6 new members that can help take up some of the slack.  With 26 active Lions who can sell sponsorships that’s about 20 per member that we need. That’s only 4 a week for the next 5 weeks per active Lion.    That’s just 1 a day and take Friday off.

When selling new sponsorships talk to everyone you do business with or who does business with you. Let them know that their $50.00 donation for each sponsorship will allow us to provide 250 prescription glasses for the needy in our community this year, among other services we provide the blind and sight impaired.

Explain that we will advertise their business on the floor at the Derby and in the racing form that every attendee and JC Lion will receive at the race.

Everybody goes about selling Turtles differently so do whatever is easiest for you. I like to see people in person and call on a minimum of 5 per day. If I can’t see them, after a couple of personal call attempts, I’ll call them on the phone.  If I can’t reach them by phone I’ll email them or send them our Turtle Derby news release  in the mail.

However, I think your best strategy is to see them in the flesh, second best is to speak to them on the phone and (only if necessary) send them a email or letter. But that’s me, you do it the way it works best for you. B

ecause we only do two fundraisers each year and the TD is the biggest we need all hands on deck if we’re going to hit 500.

Let’s “get ‘er done”!

Minutes of the Regular Meeting Aug. 7, 2014

Meeting notes from the 1st  regular meeting for August of the Johnson City Lions Club held Thursday, August 7 ,2014 at the Johnson City Country Club, Johnson City, TN 37604

(17 members present and 1 guest)

The meeting was called to order at 12:25 PM by King Lion George Winton.

After the prayer and pledge the secretary won the drawing and donated the money to the Turtle Derby.

DG Lion Ed Gibbons  introduced his guest, Larry Street, a local contractor, who is very seriously considering membership to our excellent service organization and has an  application  he’ll probably turn in 8/21/2014.

District Governor  Gibbons awarded King Lion George his 25 year membership chevron and letter of appreciation from LCIF’s new president. Other Lions, not in attendance, were similarly recognized and will receive their awards at a future meeting.

King George officially kicked off this year’s Turtle Derby. It will take place on Friday, October 10th at Brooks Gym. Lion Gough moved that we set a goal of 500 sponsorship sales this year. The motion was seconded by Lion Campbell and unanimously approved.

In order to accomplish this goal five teams of five JC Lions will need to sell 100 sponsorships (20 sponsorships per team member). Each team will have a team captain. Each captain will be a new Lion whose important job will be to report total turtle sponsorships to the Lion secretary by 8 PM on the first, second and third Wednesday each month. This way everyone will know how we’re doing and how close we are to hitting our goal for this the most important fundraiser of the year. Here are the teams, A,B,C,D and E. Feel free to rename your team when your team captain lets you know which team you’re on.  Here are the captains:

Mike Ferguson – mfergum@hotmail.com

Jerry Mathisen – jmath300@yahoo.com

Lynda  Gochenouer –buckeye0682@hotmail.com

Ed Henley – woolyed@hotmail.com

Tom Terry – tvt777@charter.net

Teams – please cooperate with your captain; don’t make him run you down those three Wednesdays each month. That way they don’t have to bother you when you’re eating or trying to unwind from a tough day of selling turtles. Just email, text or call him/her with the number of sponsorships sold by the team.

In the next day or so I’ll send you a form to send in with the information you need to provide for each sale. Send that information to Steve Campbell – srcampbell@northeaststate.edu by September 8th.

If your captain doesn’t hear from you by 6PM on the first three Wednesday nights by email, text or telephone they have been instructed to visit your home and stand outside and call you out by name with a bull horn for your report.

It’s easy to report too! Example: Send this email those Wednesday’s with this report.  “Hi Lynda, I’ve sold a total of 15 turtles so far.”  All you have to change each time is the number of sponsorships sold. That number should get bigger with each report.  Please report before 6PM.

Captains – I’ll send you your team members tomorrow. Please send me your totals for the team (i.e. “we’ve sold 36 so far”). That way Lion Gough won’t have to run you down.

As you can see, this will be a team effort – we must all get out of the wagon and pull hard for four weeks.

PDG Lion Dennis Powell introduced our speakers today,  Messrs. Page and Fox, executives with the Sequoyah Council of the Boy Scouts of America who brought all those present up to date on the great things the Scouts are doing all over America. It was good to see most of the Lions in attendance were former scouts You’ll be happy to know that this two excellent speakers  volunteered to buy a turtle or two before they left. Lion Dennis said he would take care of that and we all know he will.

Meeting adjourned at 12:59 PM

(9 members present and 2 guests)

The meeting was called to order at 12:24 PM by King Lion George Winton. Lion CB Willis led the pledge and DG Lion Gibbons led us in prayer.

The secretary won the drawing and donated the money to the Turtle Derby.

Lion Jerry Lonon (aka. Buffalo) introduced his guest, Dave Spinato, an executive with the Johnson City Power Board who begged Jerry for an application for membership.  Here we grow again!

District Governor Gibbons introduced Hallie Foster as his guest. Ms. Foster is a pre-med student from Columbus doing a summer school project in this area who called Lion Ed’s office regarding our sight conservation program to help individuals in the community who need assistance getting prescription glasses.  Hallie will produce an application in Spanish as part of her project and send it to DG Gibbons and Webmaster Gough for posting on the website.

King George announced that a District cabinet meeting will be held this Saturday (7/19) at LVBI headquarters in Morristown (758 West Morris Blvd.) starting at 8:30 AM and over by noon.  Our president, looking as sharp as ever, said that he’d like to see as many JC Lions there as possible.  It’s only an hour drive and our District Governor will be there along with his lovely first lady Theresa, our fabulous Lion Tamer, so plan on giving Eddie the support he needs and deserves by attending.  Lion Ed will be reviewing where we are, where we need to be and how we’re going to get there.  This is truly, “A time for all Lions to come to the aid of their District”.

Any who can’t attend – it better not be many – can come to the annual Health Fair Saturday at 7:30 AM and help Lions CB Willis and Tom Terry give those attending a chance to get an idea if they need glasses by letting them read the eye chart that will be provided by this club.  Applications for glasses will be available for those who need them; also applications for membership will be provided.  This gala event will be held at the Farmers Market at the corner of S. Roan St. and State of Franklin Road.

The aforementioned Lion Lonon introduced himself as our speaker today. With his encyclopedic knowledge of Pin trading and his vast experience trading them all present were treated to a erudite and entertaining presentation.  It WAS a doozey!!!

King George asked PDG Lion Dennis Powell to be the program chairman for the first regular meeting in August, at which time we will kick off the Turtle Derby (start selling turtles now), and DG Gibbons will be the P.C. for the second regular meeting.

Meeting adjourned at 12:58 PM

8. New Business:  Lion Wynn moved that we hold off for up to one year buying the new Spot Camera for eye exams for two reasons, (1) right now the number of screenings do not warrant the new camera and (2) as the ACA kicks in the need for screenings may go away and we can use the $7,000.00+ for other needs. Her letter asked for financial help for travel expenses for a mission trip to Belize with her mother. Johnson City Lions Club Board Meeting Notes (LCI No. 5093)
Date: Thursday, June 12, 2014
Meeting Place: THE JOHNSON CITY COUNTRY CLUB

The Regular Board Meeting was called to order at 12:27 PM.

The Board Members who have a “P” after their names were in attendance.
President George Winton- P
Immediate Past President Sterling Winn –
1st Vice-President Ken Gough –
2nd Vice President Gayle Cox –
3rd Vice President Steve Campbell – P
Projects Treasurer Ed Gibbons- P
Administrative Treasurer Debbie Shipley-p
Tail Twister Mike Ferguson- P
Lion Tamer Theresa Gibbons –
Secretary John Merriss – P

Directors:

2 Year Director Lynda Gochenouer-
Special Two Year Director Terry Thomas-

1. Minutes of the last BOD Meeting: The meeting notes from the last BOD meeting were read and approved unanimously.

2. Administrative Treasurer: Lion Debbie Shipley reported total income for May was $815.34 with expenses of $528.03 for a profit of $287.31 and a checkbook balance $4,992.03. Lion Campbell moved to accept the Administrative Treasurer’s reports as written and submitted. King Gibbons seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved

3. Projects Treasurer: Lion Ed Gibbons: from 5/8/2014 to 6/12/2014 – Income, $412.90, expenses, $1913.24 for the same period resulting in a loss of $1500.34 with total Liabilities & Equity of $27,695.15. Lion Shipley moved to accept the Treasurers’ reports as written and submitted. Lion Campbell seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved

4. Membership: The following Lions have missed 4 or more consecutive regular meetings – Gayle Cox, Sam Messimer, Mark Fox and Clem Wilkes

5. Dues: No members are past due.

6. Committee Reports:

Recycling: No report.
Sight Conservation: No report.
Eye Screenings: No report.
Kid Sight Eye screenings: No report.
Turtle Derby: No report. King Lion asked Lion Campbell to negotiate a race date in late October to early or mid November and reminded the Board that it’s getting time to start thinking about and, yes, start selling or at least pre-selling, turtles.

7. Old Business: Lions Shipley and Gibbons offered to contact previous members of the club to see if they would be willing to become the project manager for the building of a home for a blind couple who have already been approved for a Habitat for Humanity house in Washington County. It was noted that the Kingsport Club took on this project for a blind couple in Sullivan County last year so the project manager could most likely get some good advise/help from that individual. Well, anyway it wouldn’t hurt to ask. Also, if the Campus Club was involved in the planning maybe it could become a mentoring project for the University.

Meetings: Lion Shipley suggested that we consider either making one of the regular meetings each month a Thursday evening meeting or making the 4th Thursday a bonus/make-up evening meeting. King Lion said he would bring this ideal up for discussion at the next regular meeting next Thursday.

Lion Campbell passed out the new budget that was approved at last week’s regular meeting.

Lion Gibbons reported that he and Lion Gough are working towards making a recommendation for the formation of an Elizabethton branch club probably in July.

8. New Business: Lion Gibbons moved that one of the Melvin Jones Awards, one of 12 we currently own (more than any other Tennessee club), be donated to the District to give to a club that cannot fund this award at the present time. The motion was seconded by Lion Campbell and passed unanimously. It was noted that there are several deserving Lions who are eligible for the MJA in this Club and King Lion said he will ask the Club VP’s to work on recommending individuals for the reception of this important recognition of service. Also, keep in mind that non- members, people who serve the community, are eligible for this award.

Meeting adjourned at: 12.58 PM.

Next Regular Meeting: Next Thursday, June 19, 2014.

Lion Tamer Theresa Gibbons introduced Lion Bryon Botts who introduced his guest and stepson, Blake. Bryon is very proud of Blake and rightfully so – Blake excels in school as a straight A student, where he has earned several significant awards and was recently named Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Club. Way to go Blake! Consider being a Lion – I’m sure you’ll make a great one.

King Lion Dr. Winton (AKA King George) reminded those present that we are still seeking a director (honcho) to work with Habitat for Humanity to build a home for a bind couple in the community who have already met their eligibility requirements. This would be a large commitment but for the right qualified individual, woman or man, Lion or not, and it would be the foundation for a huge community service project while giving us the opportunity to communicate how we “serve”. It may result in gaining new members. Also, volunteers will be needed to work on the construction phrase.

King George awarded Lion Ken Gough an important award, his new membership chevron for bringing in two new members for FYE April 30, 2014.

Lion Steve Campbell presented the Budget for FYE 2015. After discussion, a recommendation to amend the Budget was made by Lion Gough with the following adjustments; under income remove $2000.00 for Lion Field Signs and under expenses remove $1000.00 for Youth leagues, $1,000.00 for eyeglass collection expenses, $500.00 for Lions sign expenses and add $500.00 to the ETSU Lions for support for the new Leo Club. The motion was seconded by lion Don Raines and approved unanimously by voice vote. Lion Gough then moved that the amended budget be accepted. Seconded by Lion Gibbons, that motion was also approved unanimously.

Program Chair Ken Gough introduce Dr. Greg Wallace with the Johnson City School Board who talked mostly about safety in the school system especially what’s being done to protect the students from harm in the event of a school shooting episode.

Meeting adjourned at 1:03 PM

Humbly submitted,

Lion John Merriss
