Re: JOHNSON CITY LIONS CLUB KICKS OFF 60th ANNUAL TURTLE DERBY

The Johnson City Lions Club will kick off its 60th Annual Turtle Derby and begin selling turtles this week. The Turtle Derby is the Johnson City Lions Club’s largest fundraiser. All funds raised go to Sight Conservation projects and other charitable programs of the Lions.

The Johnson City Lions Club will celebrate the 65th anniversary of its founding in 1947 this December. Through all these 65 years the local community has generously supported our community service projects, so it is appropriate that the public have an accounting of our stewardship of the funds entrusted to us during the past year.

During the 2011-2012 year, we had net income of $31,347 because of the hard work of our members. These funds came from:

  •  The Turtle Derby ($18,790)
  • Pecan Sales ($2831)
  • Gum Ball Machines ($1,006)
  • Trust Fund ($669)
  • Memorials ($1645
  • Sight Conservation contributions ($5010)
  • Nuts & Bolts ($525), and
  • Lions Field Signs ($1540).

Service project disbursements for the year include:

  • Eyeglasses & Exams ($17,910)
  • District 12N Charities ($1000)
  • Vision Problem Diagnosis Camera ($5500)
  • Mattress Giveaway (Tornado Disaster Relief) ($2673)
  • District 12N White Cane Days (District charities) ($1000)
  • Leader Dogs for the Blind ($500)
  • Little League Team ($700)
  • Christmas Benevolence ($250), and
  • Lions Club International Foundation ($1000)

The 60th Annual Turtle Derby will be run at Brooks Gym ETSU on October 19th at 7:00PM.  You can enter a Turtle in the race for a donation of $50.

Over 3,500 pairs of used eyeglasses were collected and shipped to Roanoke, Va., where they were cleaned, graded and packed for use by mission trips to poor countries around the world.

288 eye exams and pairs of eyeglasses were provided free of charge to needy individuals during this year.

The KidSight Program conducts regular vision problem screenings at area schools, daycare centers and other locations.
